Finite Fields and Applications

This volume represents the refereed proceedings of the Fifth International Conference on Finite Fields and Applications (F q5) held at the University of Augsburg (Germany) from August 2-6, 1999, and hosted by the Department of Mathematics. The conference continued a series of biennial international conferences on finite fields, following earlier conferences at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas (USA) in August 1991 and August 1993, the University ofGlasgow (Scotland) in July 1995, and the University ofWaterloo (Canada) in August 1997. The Organizing Committee of F q5 comprised Thomas Beth (University ofKarlsruhe), Stephen D. Cohen (University of Glasgow), Dieter Jungnickel (University of ...

This book is based on a graduate education program on computational discrete mathematics run for several years in Berlin, Germany, as a joint effort of theoretical computer scientists and mathematicians in order to support doctoral students and advanced ongoing education in the field of discrete mathematics and algorithmics. The 12 selected lectures by leading researchers presented in this book provide recent research results and advanced topics in a coherent and consolidated way. Among the areas covered are combinatorics, graph theory, coding theory, discrete and computational geometry, optimization, and algorithmic aspects of algebra.

Numbers, Information and Complexity

Numbers, Information and Complexity is a collection of about 50 articles in honour of Rudolf Ahlswede. His main areas of research are represented in the three sections, `Numbers and Combinations', `Information Theory (Channels and Networks, Combinatorial and Algebraic Coding, Cryptology, with the related fields Data Compression, Entropy Theory, Symbolic Dynamics, Probability and Statistics)', and `Complexity'. Special attention was paid to the interplay between the fields. Surveys on topics of current interest are included as well as new research results. The book features surveys on Combinatorics about topics such as intersection theorems, which are not yet covered in textbooks, several contributions by leading experts in data compression, and relations to Natural Sciences are discussed.

Learning and Experiencing Cryptography with CrypTool and SageMath

This book provides a broad overview of cryptography and enables cryptography for trying out. It emphasizes the connections between theory and practice, focuses on RSA for introducing number theory and PKI, and links the theory to the most current recommendations from NIST and BSI. The book also enables readers to directly try out the results with existing tools available as open source. It is different from all existing books because it shows very concretely how to execute many procedures with different tools. The target group could be self-learners, pupils and students, but also developers and users in companies. All code written with these open-source tools is available. The appendix describes in detail how to use these tools. The main chapters are independent from one another. At the end of most chapters, you will find references and web links. The sections have been enriched with many footnotes. Within the footnotes you can see where the described functions can be called and tried within the different CrypTool versions, within SageMath or within OpenSSL.

Repetitorium Bachelor Mathematik

Prochloron: A Microbial Enigma

Ralph A. LewiQand Lanna Cheng In physics, the discovery of new (more properly, hitherto undetected) particles has often resulted from a search: like the discovery of America, their existence had been postulated but their actual existence awaited confirmation. In biology, new discoveries are rarely made in this way. The existence of an alga like Prochloron, as a putative ancestor of chloro plasts, had been postulated, but in fact its discovery was a consequence of fortuitous events. Green algal symbionts in didemnid ascidians had been known for decades to a few marine zoologists who had worked in coral reef areas, but nobody had bothered much about them. When we happened to find them, under b...
