Ever since HBO's slogan "It's Not TV, It's HBO" launched in 1996, so-called quality television has reached a new level of marketing, recognition, and indeed quality. With other networks imitating the formula, the "HBO effect" triggered a wave of creative output. This turn to quality set off two shifts: (a) Contemporary television staged an international resurgence of the auteur, and (b) America transformed into an "on-demand nation." The chapters in this volume analyze new television lifestyles including marginalized perspectives, fan participation, and an emerging nostalgia correlated with trash aesthetics.
Queer Turkey
Before President Erdogan's repressive politics took hold, queer cultures were more visible than ever in Turkey. Schon bei den frühen Avantgardisten des ausgehenden 19. Jh. zeichnet sich ein performativer Textbegriff ab, der das Verhältnis zwischen Körper und Sprache reflektiert. Am radikalsten manifestiert sich dieses dekonstruktive Textverständnis in einer Auflösung der Geschlechtergrenzen. Problematisch jedoch scheint die Tendenz, daß marginale Kunstwerke von der angeblich pluralistisch-postmodernen Gesellschaft absorbiert werden. Aber gerade das subversiv performative Spiel der gegenwärtigen künstlerischen Avantgarde mit dem gender-Begriff vermag Mechanismen autoritärer, hierarchisierender Festschreibungen aufzudecken.

The Politics of Gender in Early American Theater
In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the American theater emerged as a crucial cultural space for debates around gender stereotypes, gendered conduct, sexual desire, the politics of intimacy and domesticity, female authorship, as well as the complex intersections of gender and other markers of cultural difference, such as race, ethnicity, socioeconomic class, age, or nation. This collection explores the role of gender in the formation of American theatrical culture in this period. It features essays on well-known early American dramatists such as Susanna Rowson or Judith Sargent Murray, but also sheds light on anonymous authors and more obscure theatrical practices.

Passionate Politics
This new collection of essays on American stage and film melodrama assesses the multifarious and contradictory uses to which melodrama has been put in American culture from the late 18th century to the present. It focuses on the various ways in which the genre has periodically intervened in debates over race, class, gender and sexuality and, in this manner, has also persistently contributed to the formation and transformation of American nationhood: from the debates over who constitutes the newborn nation in the Early Republic, to the subsequent conflict over abolition and the discussion of gender roles at the turn of the 19th century, to the fervent class struggles of the 1930s and the critiques of domestic containment in the 1950s, as well as to ongoing debates of gender, race, and sexuality today. Addressing these issues from a variety of different angles, including historical, aesthetic, cultural, phenomenological, and psychological approaches, these essays present a complex picture of the cultural work and passionate politics accomplished by melodrama over the course of the past two centuries, particularly at times of profound social change.
Austria and America
While the end of the US's civil war marked a boom in US tourism in Europe, Austria's own civil war in 1934 both curtailed American tourism in Austria and marked a small, but important, wave of Austrian emigration to the US. Writing Migration through the Body
Writing Migration through the Body builds a study of the body as a mutable site for negotiating and articulating the transnational experience of mobility. At its core stands a selection of recent migration stories in Italian, which are brought into dialogue with related material from cultural studies and the visual arts. Occupying no single disciplinary space, and drawing upon an elaborate theoretical framework ranging from phenomenology to anthropology, human geography and memory studies, this volume explores the ways in which the skin itself operates as a border, and brings to the surface the processes by which a sense of place and self are described and communicated through the migrant body. Through investigating key concepts and practices of transnational embodied experience, the book develops the interpretative principle that the individual bodies which move in contemporary migration flows are the primary agents through which the transcultural passages of images, emotions, ideas, memories – and also histories and possible futures – are enacted.
US American Expressions of Utopian and Dystopian Visions
