University dropout is a global problem with pernicious social and economic effects. The various university systems in developed countries illustrate the seriousness of the issue. In Spain, through the annual reports of Data and Figures of the Spanish University System published by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport. The situation of Spain in the developed countries as a whole, with a comparative perspective and the global dimension of the problem, is dealt with in successive reports by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport. The successive reports of the OECD and the EU through Eurostat deal with the situation of Spain in a comparative perspective and the global dimension of the problem.
The present book brings together experience, current work, and promising future trends associated with distributed computing, artificial intelligence, and their application in order to provide efficient solutions to real problems. DCAI 2023 is a forum to present applications of innovative techniques for studying and solving complex problems in artificial intelligence and computing areas. This year’s technical program presents both high quality and diversity, with contributions in well-established and evolving areas of research. Specifically, 108 papers were submitted, by authors from 31 different countries representing a truly “wide area network” of research activity. The DCAI 23 technical program has selected 36 full papers in the main track and, as in past editions, there will be special issues in ranked journals. This symposium is organized by the LASI and Centro Algoritmi of the University of Minho (Portugal). This book presents the latest research on Ambient Intelligence (AmI) presented in the 14th International Symposium on Ambient Intelligence (ISAmI 2023). Among others, interested researchers can find works on the recognition of emotions and life conditions; smart applications for improving people’s quality of life and safety; smart cities and territories; as well as advances in data semantics, organization, and privacy, among others. The symposium was organized by the Universidade do Minho (Portugal), the Universitat Politècnica de València (Spain), the University of Granada (Spain), the National Institute of Informatics (Japan), the Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (Portugal), the Universidad de Salamanca (Spain), and with the AIR Institute (Spain) as sponsor. The present edition was hosted by the LASI and Centro Algoritmi of the University of Minho in Guimarães (Portugal) from July 12 to 14, 2023.
There are growing calls for Higher Education Institutions to become more civically engaged and socially relevant in their local regions. The central aim of the Communities and Students Together (CaST) project has been to advance our knowledge and understanding of the myriad forms of Engaged Learning and to develop a deeper understanding of engagement. The project highlighted the diversity and flexibility to be found within Engaged Learning initiatives in each of the participating universities. The examples provided range widely in their structure and intended outcomes. However, the one constant is each initiative’s commitment to a concept where reciprocity between the students, universities and communities is prioritised. This volume includes discussions on the practical methodology, pedagogical strategies and approaches of Engaged Learning, as well as perspectives from both higher education institutes and communities, of the benefits of Engaged Learning in different contexts. The authorshave chosen the title: ‘Voices across Europe’ - in order to represent the wide range of stakeholders’ perspectives involved in Engaged Learning.
Globalization, digitalization, and a rapid technological development of many areas of life and society, bring humanity to another level of development. Changes in the educational organizations are inevitable and the university must meet new requirements in a new paradigm (Gafurov, Safiullin, Akhmetshin, Gapsalamov, & Vasilev, 2020). Universities, as institutions capable of thinking the future, assume an increasingly relevant role at the level of the growing importance of science and its social and economic impact. In this line of thought, their metamorphosis should be promoted. This renewal requires four movements: from employability to general, humanistic, and scientific education; from the excellence of academic productivism to the valorisation of pedagogy and teaching and training work; from entrepreneurialism to a sense of community; from entrepreneurship to public responsibility (Nóvoa, 2019).

Los métodos pedagógicos, o metodologías de enseñanza y aprendizaje, se encuentran actualmente en un momento álgido. Hoy en día proliferan por las revistas científicas y las redes sociales métodos pedagógicos activos, en donde el estudiante asume el rol principal en su proceso de aprendizaje. Este libro trata de mostrar las diversas metodologías pedagógicas que se utilizan en el ámbito universitario, ofreciendo una amplia variedad de posibilidades. En él se aborda cada una de las metodologías activas desde una perspectiva práctica, dado que en cada capítulo se presentan los aspectos más teóricos de los diversos métodos, una propuesta práctica para su aplicación y los aspectos, tanto positivos como negativos, de su aplicación en el aula. Este manual pretende convertirse en un referente en el ámbito universitario, concretamente en el profesorado que quiera cambiar su línea metodológica y quiera comenzar a aplicar métodos pedagógicos activos e innovadores en sus procesos de enseñanza y aprendizaje. Además, puede servir para docentes de otras etapas educativas que quieran iniciarse en la aplicación de métodos activos de enseñanza.
