This collection of stories, facts and photos is about a family living in Otago, New Zealand in the last half of the nineteenth century and into the twentieth century. The family lived in Gabriels Gully, Lawrence, Otago where the Gold Rush of the 1860s began. The stories centre on Thomas McMullan and Beatrice Howe-Johns, and their 8 children. Between them they lived from the 1870s until the 2000s. As with most families, their lives were both ordinary and special. The author was one of three physicists from Victoria University of Wellington who towed a magnetometer behind the ship to gather early information about the mid-ocean ridge which continues to drive New Zealand apart from Antarctica.
