Owls Do Cry is the story of the Withers family: Francie, soon to leave school to start work at the woollen mills; Toby, whose days are marred by the velvet cloak of epilepsy; Chicks, the baby of the family; and Daphne, whose rich, poetic imagination condemns her to a life in institutions. 'Janet Frame's first full-length work of fiction, Owls Do Cry, is an exhilarating and dazzling prelude to her long and successful career. She was to write in several modes, publishing poems, short stories, fables and volumes of autobiography, as well as other novels of varied degrees of formal complexity, but Owls Do Cry remains unique in her oeuvre. It has the freshness and fierceness of a mingled cry of joy and pain. Its evocation of childhood recalls Blake's Songs of Innocence and of Experience, as well as the otherworldly Shakespearean lyric of her title and epigraph, but her handling of her dark material is wholly original' Margaret Drabble

Sad Janet

An irresistibly blackhearted comedy about doctors, dating, dogs, and depression Janet works at a ramshackle dog shelter in the woods. She has a passive-aggressive boyfriend, a meddlesome family, and a clutch of eccentric coworkers. Most of all, she has her "sad"--a comfortable cloak of gloomy realism that brings her comfort when everyone around her has surrendered to the permanent promise of pharmaceutical bliss. Janet wants no part of this, and her family has nearly given up on her. That is, until the fateful summer when word spreads of a new pill that offers even confirmed cynics a short-term taste of happiness . . . just long enough to make it through the holidays without sinking into depression. When her family stages an intervention, her boyfriend leaves her, and the prospect of making it through Christmas alone seems like too much, Janet decides to give in to the pressure. What follows is life-changing for all concerned--in ways no one quite expected. Sharp-tongued, relentlessly witty, yet surprisingly warm, Sad Janet is the depression comedy you never knew you needed.

In Parallel

In Parallel is a wonderful read, Janet Barker had a childhood shaped by a large family of fascinating characters and by a war that treated Hull so badly. This book is beautifully written, with a light touch and vivid recall family, friends and aquaintances are illuminated in all thier quirky individuality and events laid out with great clarity. In reading this book it felt an easy step to be in that past parallel world when bombs fell on Hull and children collected shrapnel to show and swop at school. When women took real pride in the cleanliness of their front door step, but when soot from chimnies made grimy clothes hung out on the washing line. When families were big and forever in and out of each other's homes and humour was found in everthing and everyone. --D. Wall, via Amazon.
