Christoph Hein is one of the best-known authors of the former GDR, and his works of fiction have been widely interpreted as responses to and critiques of socialist society. In this study, David Clarke undertakes a detailed analysis of all of Christoph Hein’s major works of fiction from Der fremde Freund (1928) to Willenbrock (2000) in order to explore Hein’s critique of the GDR regime, whilst also demonstrating how aspects of that critique provided a starting point for Hein’s rejection of capitalism both before and after German unification. For Hein, socialism had failed to make good its promise to create a community bound together by common values and goals, preferring instead to impose conformity upon its citizens. Capitalism, he believed, was equally unable to meet the need for community, and Hein sought to demonstrate the consequences of this state of affairs in the figure of Wörle in his first post-unification novel, Das Napoleon-Spiel (1993). After this point, Clarke argues, Hein was nevertheless forced to re-examine his criticism of capitalism, a process which ultimately led to the more differentiated and convincing portrayal to be found in Willenbrock.
Environments of Exile
Forced migration always takes place within specific cultural, social, political, and spatial environments. This volume focuses on the interaction between those forced to migrate and their environments in the contexts of escape and exile from Nazi-occupied Europe. Forced emigration from Nazi Germany was a global phenomenon that took refugees to regions they often knew very little about. Not only did they have to adapt to foreign cultures, but also to unfamiliar natural environments that often exposed them to severe temperature conditions, droughts, rainy seasons, and diseases. While some refugees prepared for the natural conditions of their exile destination, others acquired environmental knowledge at their host countries or were able to adapt prior knowledge to the new environment. Consequently, specific knowledge about the environment had a large influence on the forced migration experience.

Exiles Traveling
This volume presents for the first time a study of the interface between exile and travel within the context of exile from Nazi Germany. The nineteen essays share the overarching aim to compare the tropes of travel and exile as generators of a critical discourse and as central categories within German exile, in particular literature, music and film. The essays are guided by powerful questions: How does travel compare to exile, and how much overlap is there between these two categories? How do exiles travel, as practitioners of displacement? Or rather, to what extent does the concept of travel apply to the exilic predicament? Do the terms “exile” and “travel” still have validity in our postmodern era of cosmopolitanism, ever increasing mobility, the embrace of otherness, and tourism? How does exile literature in which travel is thematized compare to the tradition(s) of travel writing? Twentieth-Century Music and Politics
When considering the role music played in the major totalitarian regimes of the century it is music's usefulness as propaganda that leaps first to mind. But as a number of the chapters in this volume demonstrate, there is a complex relationship both between art music and politicised mass culture, and between entertainment and propaganda. Nationality, self/other, power and ideology are the dominant themes of this book, whilst key topics include: music in totalitarian regimes; music as propaganda; music and national identity; émigré communities and composers; music's role in shaping identities of 'self' and 'other' and music as both resistance to and instrument of oppression.
