Palaeobiology and Geobiology of Fossil Lagerstätten through Earth History
Exceptionally preserved fossils from Fossil Lagerstätten contribute greatly to resolving details on the history of life on Earth. For the first time, the “Paläontologische Gesellschaft” (PalGes) and the “Palaeontological Society of China” (PSC) combined forces to jointly present an international conference aimed to highlight and encourage the study of exceptionally well-preserved fossil sites worldwide. The conference focused on all aspects of palaeontology and geobiology, also incorporating related fields like biogeochemistry, biology, sedimentology and stratigraphy. The present volume contains the abstracts of more than 275 lectures and posters presented during the joint international conference “Palaeobiology & Geobiology of Fossil Lagerstätten through Earth History”. This year’s conference was held at the northern campus of the Georg-August University in Göttingen, Germany, from September 23-27, 2013. More than three hundred palaeontologists, biologists, geologists and other scientists and researchers from sixteen countries, mainly from Germany and the P. R. of China, participated.

Die Marinebrigade von Loewenfeld spielte als eines der wichtigsten deutschen Freikorps eine herausragende Rolle in der Zeit des politischen Umbruchs 1918–1920. Mit der eingehenden Erforschung ihrer Geschichte schließt sich eine Lücke der Freikorps- und Marine- wie auch der Bürgerkriegsgeschichte dieser Zeit. Daran anknüpfend, werden Protagonisten und sachlicher Gehalt maßgeblicher Deutungsansätze zur Geschichte der Freikorps hinterfragt, und es wird der Frage nachgegangen, wie sich monoperspektivische Sichtweisen als prägend für ein dominierendes Geschichtsbild durchsetzen konnten. Welche Bedeutung fiel dabei der Marinebrigade von Loewenfeld zu, und welche Rolle spielte eine Stadt im Ruhrgebiet? Am Beispiel einer mit skurril anmutendem Medienwirbel zu einem politischen Skandal von nationaler Bedeutung hochstilisierten Provinzbanalität wird aufgezeigt, wie die öffentliche Wahrnehmung von Freikorps- und Bürgerkriegsgeschichte zielgerichtet beeinflußt und gesteuert wurde.
Towards the Solid Protein Surface
Applications like semi-biological energy conversion systems try to combine classical solid-state technology with the exclusive advantages of biological catalysts. They unite two initially incompatible worlds - neither are protein-biocatalysts evolutionary optimized for contact to solids, nor is typical solid state technology designed for the liquid environment of proteins. If they come into contact, effective concepts for a better compatibility are needed. The "solid protein surface" works towards this goal via a biomimetic approach, where the surface chemistry of the solid is adjusted to mimic the surface of a protein - to make the biocatalyst perform like in its natural environment.
