Caroline Walker Bynum explores problems of the body and identity in devotional and theological literature, suggesting that medieval attitudes toward the body still shape modern notions of the individual. King had envisioned a mass rally of economically disadvantaged people which would shut down Washington, DC until legislators promised solutions to poverty and unemployment. He had all the poor in mind, not just black folks. He also spoke out about against the war in Vietnam. In May, the March on Washington began. I knew I had to shoot it. I had to see what was happening, to record it and be part of it....Of course, it was old stuff from the start. Another nonviolent demonstration. Another March on Washington. Another army camping, calling on a deaf government. Even poverty is ancient history...We built Resurrection City out of plywood shacks on the Washington Mall, between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. Talk about poor. The Resurrection of the Animals explores the trinity of the natural world, the humans adrift in it, and the animals that accompany them. Although each of the five sections centers on a particular theme, motifs of change, loss, cycles, and transformation thread through the collection, weaving the parts into a unified whole. Individual sections focus on: the seasons of the year, and by extension, people’s lives; the power of memory and its limitations; the theory that what is magical often resides within; and, the mysteries of love. The Resurrection of the Animals culminates in the title section, revealing the lessons of kinship with animals and how epiphanies occur in the simplest actions—taking a walk with dogs or catching sight of a bird on the wing. These poems suggest that memory, association, and interaction with the tangible world can revive a part of the self that has slipped below the depths of consciousness.
This engaging book demonstrates Shakespeare’s abiding interest in the theatrical potential of the Christian resurrection from the dead. In fourteen of Shakespeare’s plays, characters who have been lost, sometimes for years, suddenly reappear seemingly returning from the dead. In the classical recognition scene, such moments are explained away in naturalistic terms a character was lost at sea but survived, or abducted and escaped, and so on. Shakespeare never invalidates such explanations, but in his manipulation of classical conventions he parallels these moments with the recognition scenes from the Gospels, repeatedly evoking Christ’s resurrection from the dead. Benson’s close study of the plays, as well as the classical and biblical sources that Shakespeare fuses into his recognition scenes, clearly elucidates the ways in which the playwright explored his abiding interest in the human desire to transcend death and to live reunited and reconciled with others. In his manipulation of resurrection imagery, Shakespeare conflates the material with the immaterial, the religious with the secular, and the sacred with the profane.
