The Mechanobiology and Mechanophysiology of Military-Related Injuries
This book provides a state-of-the-art update, as well as perspectives on future directions of research and clinical applications in the implementation of biomechanical and biophysical experimental, theoretical and computational models which are relevant to military medicine. Such experimental and modeling efforts are helpful, on the one hand, in understanding the aetiology, pathophysiology and dynamics of injury development and on the other hand in guiding the development of better equipment and protective gear or devices that should ultimately reduce the prevalence and incidence of injuries or lessen their hazardous effects. Advances in Ceramic Armor VI
The Armor Ceramics Symposium was held January 25-27, 2010 in Daytona Beach, FL as part of the 34th International Conference & Exposition on Advanced Ceramics and Composites. The 8th edition of this symposium consisted of over 65 oral and poster presentations on topics such as Impact, Penetration and Material Modeling, Boron Carbide, Silicon Carbide, Dynamic Material Behavior, Transparent Materials and NDE Applications. The symposium continues to foster discussion and collaboration between academic, government and industry personnel from around the globe.
Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Advanced Ceramics for Gun Barrel Applications
Eight commercially available ceramic materials were procured and evaluated for potential application as gun barrel liners. These materials included an alumina, zirconia, and SiAlON, as well as three silicon carbides and two silicon nitrides. Preliminary evaluation determined the strengths, fracture toughness, Vickers hardness, thermal conductivity, specific heat, and linear coefficient of thermal expansion. An uncensored Weibull analysis was performed on all of the strength data. These databases were developed for use in the probabilistic modeling and design efforts of the program to predict performance, identify optimum gun barrel designs, and to rank and down select ceramics for further evaluation.
