The Book of Job

This volume of The Book of Job is an addition to my series of individual books of the Bible. I began with the Psalms after looking for a small simple edition of the Psalms for reading, with no commentary or footnotes, but couldn't find one so I published one. Then I added The Book of Proverbs and now The Book of Job, The series will continue with the Wisdom Books. These editions are handy for reading and study without having to open or carry a big Bible. This is the King James translation. The cover art is by Gustave Dore. Rhonda Keith Stephens, 2016

NOTE ON THIS EDITIONI compiled this book containing all the Psalms and only the Psalms because I couldn't find one to carry with me. All the editions I found seem to include commentary, or else contain only selected Psalms. In small New Testaments containing the Psalms the type is very small and hard to read. This book is intended to bridge that publishing gap. These are from the King James Version of the Bible, which is the most familiar and to me the most beautiful translation. It differs from the Douay-Rheims and other versions in the numbering of the verses as well as in the text. The quotes I pulled out are not intended as guides to prayer, but as page ornaments, where there is room. Now there is a companion volume of Proverbs. ~ Rhonda Keith Stephens, 2013

I WROTE THIS BOOK, INSPIRED BY A REAL PERSIAN HELMET, BUT THE STORY IS -- WHAT IS THE OPPOSITE OF INSPIRED? -- LOOSELY BASED ON THE BOSTON MARATHON BOMBING. I WILL GIVE $1 FROM EVERY SALE TO ONE RUN FOR BOSTON OR THE ONE FUND OR OTHER FUNDS TO HELP BOSTON MARATHON VICTIMS. When Clare Bower finds an antique Persian helmet in the trash, she couldn't have guessed its connections to jihadists, the FBI, and the Cosa Nostra. If she had known, she would have picked it up anyway. The helmet is a star player in a disaster similar to the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. The Persian Helmet brings back Roxy and Jim, Clare's friends from The Wish Book, along with the enigmatic Jackson, and introduces a new man into her life. Clench Bargo is an Army veteran, linguist, farmer, vintner, and part-time deputy sheriff. The Persian helmet in this story and on the cover is a real helmet that I really found in the late 1970s, in a trunk on a curb in the suburbs of Kent, Ohio. It is in a safe place now, and remains a real mystery.

What Made Him Sing

What Made Him Sing

A soul-baring chronicle through 64 poems of a Vietnam draft-dodger who dropped out of society and never found his way back. His search for meaning through poetry led from Akron, Ohio to the East Coast and then to San Francisco, where he worked for a time at City Lights Bookstore, owned by the famous poet, Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Through these poems the price the author paid for his refusal to conform becomes more and more apparent in his own admissions of loneliness and confusion. His struggles and points of view on issues mirror that of many ‘hippies’ during the 60’s, and provide insight into the social turmoil of those years. Dying at the age of 39, his dreams of becoming a successful poet were never realized. The poems included in What Made Him Sing, published long after his death, were not ones their author would have wanted to share with the world, but they are the ones that finally reveal who he was. The author’s very personal search for meaning is also a universal one that will touch a chord in every reader.

Del Forester, aunt of flea-market entrepreneur Clare Bower, must finally be senile because she thinks she can still order from a 1947 catalogue. Then Aunt Del's order arrives - including a brand-new antique wringer washing machine - in a new antique delivery truck driven by a mysterious young man whose nametag reads Jackson. Clare takes advantage of Del's pipeline to the past and opens a thriving business selling unlimited supplies of brand-new antiques. Meanwhile, she can't beg, trick, or seduce any information from Jackson about where he gets all that catalogue merchandise, or who he is, why he drives a different new antique truck every day, and why he seems to be a veteran of every war. The catch to Clare's good fortune is that only Aunt Del's catalogue orders can be filled. Clare's checks to Sears are returned with letters saying that of course those old catalogues are defunct. When Del dies, Clare is faced with a terrible decision, one that ultimately gets her tried for murder. Magical realism.
