The premature death of Ricardo Sánchez in 1995 marked the passing of an almost legendary figure in Chicano literature and in the Chicano political movement. A troubadour of Chicano Movement poetry, he established an anti-aesthetic that became the norm. Sánchez's autobiographical poetry forges a link between genres of the past and present and establishes him as the first great tragic figure of contemporary Chicano literature. In a body of work that spanned spatial, temporal, and cultural boundaries, Sánchez dealt with issues of power and of linguistic and cultural barriers between Anglo, Native American, and Mexican American peoples in the United States. While he lived, critics showed reluct...

Poetry. As Yevgeny Yevtushenko recounts, Ricardo Sanchez was one of the creators of la poesia chicana and his voice was the concentrate of many silent voices. His written poetry was ambassador of the non-written sufferings of so many chicanos, whose barefoot feet were in the USA, but whose barefoot soul was endlessly walking sobre la tierra seca mexicana, muriendo de la sed. Ricardo Sanchez (1941-1995) is considered one of the fathers of the Chicano literary genre and is one of the most published and widely anthologized Chicano writers. His family had roots in New Mexico for five generations, but he was raised in El Paso, Texas. Sanchez earned a PhD in American studies and cultural linguistic theory from the Union Graduate School in Cincinatti, Ohio, and taught in several schools throughout the US. He traveled continuously, lecturing and reading. The Loves of Ricardo is published posthumously. Sanchez's papers are archived at the University of Texas, Austin, and at Stanford University.

With unflinching candor, Lieutenant General Ricardo S. Sanchez describes the chaos on the Iraqi battlefield caused by the Bush administration's misguided command of the military, as well as his own struggle to set the coalition on the path toward victory. Sanchez shows how minor insurgent attacks grew into synchronized operations that finally ignited into a major insurgency and all-out civil war. He provides an insider's account of the Abu Ghraib prison scandal, explaining ...
