Children of a Compassionate God
Luke 1-6:16 forms the literary context for the Sermon on the Plain. This context grounds Jesus' teaching authority as the Son of God. The beatitudes and woes (6:20-26) establish a revolutionary vision of the authentic human life. The love commandment is grounded in two general ethical principles - the Golden Rule (6:31) as a maxim of general altruism and the imitatio Dei (6:36) making human conduct respond to the deepest human desires intimated in the Rule. Consequently, Christian disciples are to avoid hostile judgment, as their master did; one can judge truly only by examining the fruits one produces. These commands, which carry human authenticity beyond its limits, are the only way to avoid total destruction.
The Beginning of the Gospel
Mark wrote "the beginning of the Gospel" for Christians who thought it was the end. For that he told them a story of another time when Jesus' disciples thought it was the end but turned out to be the beginning. That is why the passion-resurrection of Jesus dominates the Gospel according to Mark. Using rhetorical and literary analysis, Father LaVerdiere introduces Mark's story as the beginning of the Gospel as we enter a new millennium.

A Theology of the Church for the Third Millennium
At the beginning of the new millennium, the Christian Churches are in a process of renewal. The Roman Catholic Church, since Vatican II, has been in a major stage of renewal. Contemporary globalization, multi-cultural interrelationships, and inter-religious dialogues have presented serious challenges to these renewal efforts. In this volume, I want to offer to the Catholic Renewal and from there to other denominational renewals, a view of the church from the rich tradition of Franciscan philosophy and theology. To date there are a only a few books which include small essays on this theme. This volume presents an in-depth Franciscan approach to ecclesiology.

The Church Unfinished
Like human life, the Catholic or universal Church is lived forward but understood backward. To appreciate the Church's past, however, does not require that we simply repeat it. Using such a framework, this book puts the present period of the Church in vast historical context. It traces how the Church came from the "community of unexpected persons" whom Jesus gathered around himself and was then shaped, over the course of centuries, by human decisions made in the Spirit. The Church's catholicity is seen to involve an ever expanding memory, embracing the immense richness of past and present times, places, and cultures, and at the same time an openness to assimilating, and possibly being transformed by, a future history in which God offers new possibilities. The book thus proposes that the Church's leadership would do well to nurture a renewed eschatological attitude that embraces a genuine openness to the newness and surprise of the future, leaving room not only for continuity but also for the important elements of change and transformation. For, what the Church is, only the entirety of its history will fully reveal.
Freedom and Possibility
God, omnipotent in love, has created freedom and possibility, whereas hierarchical dominance within the church limits the role of baptized women and men. The book considers the ongoing adventure of God acting through the randomness and chance of the evolutionary process, whereby matter became life and life became self-conscious spirit with freedom. God’s creation of freedom has been pivotal in the theology of the younger Joseph Ratzinger, and of Karl Rahner, Edward Schillebeeckx, and others. Making room for human freedom involves thinking about God’s patience, defenselessness, and vulnerability, particularly as made clear in the humanity of Jesus. By creating humans with their finite and free will, God has voluntarily renounced power and control. And, as Walter Kasper has emphasized, if the Church is to be a credible advocate for human rights and freedom in the world, it must assess its own record, and plan to integrate freedom into its internal structures.
