MANisfesto: A Call for Men to Become Warriors for Kindness

The news media is filled with reports of mass shootings, child molestation, road rage, vandalism, sexual harassment, and domestic violence. We instinctively assume that men are the likely perpetrators, and in the vast majority of cases, they are. The incidence of war, rape, crime, torture, genocide, and terrorism are mostly at the hands of men. Though women are certainly not blameless, the reality is that a far greater amount of the evil, hurtful, and unloving actions in the world are committed by men - men who are not in touch with their heart. It's time we men open our eyes, realize our responsibility, and do something about it. By maintaining silence in the face of malicious actions and not protesting, we are colluding. By not doing all we can to open ourselves to love, we remain part of the problem. These are the dual goals of the book. First, to help men cultivate and develop their natural inclination, which is to love and be loved. And second, to apply their loving nature in support of efforts to heal the conflicts that divide person from person, community from community, and country from country.

The husband-and-wife artists celebrate the ageing process through painting, sculpture, and personal reflections in this award-winning book. In this beautiful book, painter Alice Matzkin and her sculptor husband Richard Matzkin explore the experience of aging through their art, finding inspiration rather than despair. Both in their sixties, their ongoing collaboration has produced more than 60 works. They also share personal narratives examining various aspects of growing older—such as the progression of physical changes, sensuality and relationships, aging parents, spirituality, and death. Their works feature well-known people such as feminist Betty Friedan and potter Beatrice Wood, as well as friends, neighbors, relatives, and themselves. Drawing on their own experiences and the wisdom of older mentors, they demonstrate that the elder years can be a time of growth and wisdom rather than stagnation and loss. This wonderfully illustrated book is a feast for the eyes as well as nurturing to the spirit. Winner of the Independent Book Publisher Award and the Nautilus Award.

The motivation for me to write this poetic essay, this call to action for men, was my coming to realization of my blindness to a truth that has been hiding in plain sight. Men love differently from women. Not better. Not worse. Just different. Becoming Love-Able is a book about love, deep love, from a masculine perspective. Whether presently in an intimate partnership or wanting to be in one, the book will clarify what true love is and what specific behavioral steps a man needs to take in order to be able to create intimate, enduring relationships. RICHARD MATZKIN, MA, Psych. counts as his life's greatest accomplishment his four-decade loving marriage to his wife, Alice. Retired now, except for speaking engagements, seminars and workshops, Richard was Director of a court mandated program for men who were violent towards their partners, and Program Director of a psychiatric hospital in Los Angeles. He had been active in men's work both as a leader and participant, and for years was a facilitator of men's therapy and consciousness raising groups. He is an accomplished sculptor, jazz drummer and multiple award-winning author, and has taught meditation in the Siddha Yoga tradition. He lives with Alice, three chickens and Roamio, the cat, on an acre at the end of a road in the hills above the small town of Ojai, California.
