First published in 1985, The English-Speaking Alliance is the story of how post-war Labour governments sustained the image of Britain as world power and laid the foundations of the West's Cold War foreign policy. It is told from sources in the British, American and Australian archives, some of which have been used for the first time.

Anglo-American Relations in the Twentieth Century

A critique of Anglo-American relations in the twentieth century in the light of the most recent research. It challenges many existing interpretations and argues that the basis of the Anglo-American special relationship was laid by Roosevelt and Chamberlain, that Roosevelt preferred Stalin to Churchill, and that the origins of the Cold War should be seen as a British education of the Americans to the Soviet threat. Suez is reassessed following the recent release of material in the Eisenhower Library. There is a consideration of the relationship of 'mutual interdependence' and why Wilson and Heath chose to move instead towards the European connection, as well as Mrs Thatcher's reasons for preferring the Atlantic alliance.

British Defence Policy Since 1945

Based on excerpts from original sources, this book provides an introduction to the controversies and dilemmas that have confronted those making and implementing British defence policy since the end of World War II. Ovendale explores the policy dilemmas caused by Britain's parallel commitments to continental Europe and to a global foreign policy, the legacy of her imperial past. He also examines the decision in 1957 to rely on the nuclear deterrent, abolish conscription and move away from a maritime strategy; and the role of the Treasury in dictating the limits of British defence policy.

This highly-regarded history gives a balanced and judicious introduction to this immensely complex and controversial subject, weaving different strands of the story into a single coherent narrative, thus making it essential reading for all students studying conflict in the Middle East. Of all the troubles affecting the modern world few are as topical, deep rooted and intractable as the Arab-Israeli conflict. For this region, an understanding of the past is vital to an understanding of the present. Ritchie Ovendale’s classic study of the roots of the conflict is now updated for a fourth time and considers events until 2003.

As well as jeopardising its own interests in the Middle East and the Mediterranean, American policy towards the Palestine question in the 1940s carried considerable risk of conflict with its allies, in particular with Britain. This book, based on British and American archival sources, examines the extent to which Harry Truman was a victim of a political system which allowed minority racial and religious groups to dictate not only United States foreign policy, but what policy an ally should follow in defiance of its own interests. Against the background of the emergence of the Cold War and the birth of the state of Israel, it shows the attempt made by Ernest Bevin to keep the explosive Palestine situation separate from the deepening needs of the Anglo-American special relationship, at the same time laying foundations for Western security. Dr Ovendale argues that in the end it was the Palestinian Arabs, not the Anglo-American special relationship, that were sacrificed, and discusses the first Arab-Israeli war in the context of great power diplomacy and American domestic policies. His controversial conclusions are supported by the use of new and important source material.
