Abbot served his apprenticeship as a confectioner at Negri & Gunter (later Gunter's Tea Shop) in Berkeley Square in London's fashionable Mayfair which supplied sweetmeats of all description to the nobility. His advice was often sought by the housekeepers of the rich and, finding little time to attend to individual enquiries after leaving Negri & Gunter to work in the service of various noblemen, he decided to write this recipe book giving guidance in all aspects of confectionary including preserving fruits, making cakes and biscuits, and methods for producing ices.
