General description of the collection: The Robert L. Sweeney papers include a completed World War II Veterans Survey questionnaire which traces Sweeney's military service and post war activities. He found the equipment, clothing, rations, and supply services mostly adequate. He says that the Germans were well-trained and had excellent tanks and arms. Combat Command and below had generally good officers; above this level, not as consistently good. Recreational opportunities varied with the unit location - "where available wine, women, and song," card playing and gambling otherwise. He listened to BBC for news. Morale plummeted when the unit was out-gunned and improved as the equipment improved. He rates his trip as an officer on the Queen Mary as 'first-class all the way.' Military-civilian relations were good. He says that the Allied soldiers were appreciated but that the Italian partisans were not effective because of political factions within the partisan leadership, i.e. Communists vs. others. He comments on the de-Nazification program and displaced persons he encountered while working in military government.

Schindler, Kings Road, and Southern California Modernism

"This book establishes R.M. Schindler’s Kings Road House amongst the icons of modernist housing—as crucial as Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, Mies van der Rohe, or Frank Lloyd Wright to the story of twentieth-century residential design. Weaving together an impressive blend of primary sources, Sweeney and Sheine illuminate heretofore unknown or neglected stories regarding Schindler’s life, his relationship with his mentors—most notably, Wright himself—and the development of his unique theories about space. These essays will interest both scholars and practitioners of architecture as well as readers wishing to learn more about the development of architectural modernism in general.”—J. Philip Gruen, School of Design and Construction, Washington State University.

Wright in Hollywood

The early, exotic projects, described by Wright himself as "California-Romanza," gave way to designs that seem to acknowledge Wright's awareness of European modernism, which had developed simultaneously.

'Ladies and Gentlemen...I have to state that Mrs Lovett's pies are made of human flesh!' This shocking announcement provides the stunning dénouement to a narrative first published over a period of four months in the winter of 1846-7. The revelation marked only the beginning, however, of the notorious career of Sweeney Todd, soon known to legend as the 'Demon Barber' of London's Fleet Street. The story of Todd's entrepreneurial partnership with neighbouring pie-maker Margery Lovett - at once inconceivably unpalatable and undeniably compelling - has subsequently provided the substance for a seemingly endless series of successful dramatic adaptations, popular songs and ballads, novellas, radio...
