Robert M. Hauser has advanced social science methodologies while pushing the boundary of modern research on social stratification. He has helped consolidate the foundation of the structural equation model in his pedagogical papers of the methodology and empirical papers on the status attainment model. He has also introduced unobservable variables in the sociological framework and demonstrated the use of its variants in measurement models and sibling resemblance models. His work on log-linear models has geared the analysis of mobility tables toward a new direction that no longer confounds changes in the distributions of parents' and offspring's occupations with changes in opportunity for mobility.
