Darwin's Theatre
Marco Bakker and Alexandre Blanc established their architectural firm, BABL Bakker and Blanc Architects, in Switzerland in 1992. At their offices in Lausanne and Zurich, they develop designs that are modest yet reflect the high demands of the built environment. Darwin's Theatre: BABL at Work documents more than twenty-five years of the firm's work and demonstrates their vision and approach through a selection of thirty-four built and unrealized designs. Inspired by Pieter Bruegel the Elder's famous painting of the Tower of Babel, the book is conceived as a chronological spiral stairway to heaven that represents the evolution of eternal questions concerning space and time. This innovative concept reflects BABL's continuous work on recurring questions and the realization that each of their projects is an iteration of earlier ideas.

Drawing inspiration from Nordic housing and leading figures such as Arne Jacobsen and Kay Fisker, Carsten Lorenzen has a wealth of experience ranging from subsidised housing to private complexes, from the conception phase to the execution of precise details. This first monograph presents some 25 projects and ideas that have been planned or constructed since 1996. Essays describe the special challenges posed by brick construction, the quality of Lorenzen?s floor plans, and the architect's relationship to Copenhagen.

Ines Lüder zeigt in diesem Kontext heterogene Praktiken des Gebrauchs und das Ringen um Deutungshoheit auf. Sie erarbeitet anhand der Fachhallen- und Barghäuser der Steinburger Elbmarschen eine Zustandsbeschreibung und typologische Neuordnung. Dabei kontextualisiert sie die mehrdeutigen Gebäude mit ihren Interdependenzen als Bestandteil der Transformation ländlicher Räume und prüft sie auf ihr baukulturelles Potenzial für künftige Weiterentwicklung.
