Dimensions of Diffusion and Diversity
Variation is the norm in language. It is the universal trait that has never been embarrassed by counterexamples. As language is a joint product of human cognition and human society, the dimensions underlying language variation could potentially reveal the complexity of the human mind and defines us of what we are as cognitive and social beings, be it Austrians speaking German, or Nepalis speaking Dumi. This volume includes eight papers highlighting three dimensions underlying language variation. The linguistic dimension explores how language changes across the physical time span and across linguistic breadth. The cognitive dimension examines how the human mind handles experiential frequency and life experiences, and how it copes with suboptimal processing faculties. Finally, the contextual dimension focuses on how language interacts with its ambiance, either in the form of geographical surroundings, or in the form of artistic styles. The uniqueness of this volume lies not only in its wide range of dimensions investigated, but also in its broad spectrum of languages covered. This enables us to form a fuller understanding of how language evolves and interacts with human cognition.

A revival of interest in morphology has occurred during recent years. The Yearbook of Morphology series, published since 1988, has proven to be an eminent support for this upswing of morphological research, since it contains articles on topics which are central in the current theoretical debates which are frequently referred to. The Yearbook of Morphology 1999 focuses on diachronic morphology, and shows, in a number of articles by renowned specialists, how complicated morphological systems develop in the course of time. Voicing in Dutch
This volume focuses on the phonology, phonetics and psycholinguistics of voicing-related phenomena in Dutch. Dutch phonology has played a touchstone role in the past few decades where competing phonological theories regarding laryngeal representation have been concerned. Debates have focused on the phonetic facts (Is final neutralization complete or incomplete? Are the assimilation rules phonetic or phonological?) and the most adequate phonological analyses (Is [voice] a binary feature? What constraints are necessary? What is the best way of implementing the role of morphology?). This volume summarises and adds fuel to these debates on several fronts, by providing an overview of analyses so far (rule-based as well as constraint-based) and proposing a new one, by drawing attention to new facts, such as exceptions to final devoicing in certain dialects and the behaviour of loanwords, and by re-examining the phonetic state of affairs and the behaviour of voiced, voiceless and partially devoiced segments in psycholinguistic experiments.
Produktivität und der Erstspracherwerb
Es lohnt sich vor allem aus zweierlei Gründen die frühe Phase des Spracherwerbs bzw. der Sprachproduktion im Kontext der sprachlichen Produktivität zu betrachten. Erstens können dank der neuen korpuslinguistischen Methoden zu empirischen Messungen der Produktivität Hypothesen aufgestellt bzw. überprüft und offene Fragen, die sich den klassischen experimentellen Verfahrensweisen der Spracherwerbsforschung entziehen, geklärt werden. Zweitens wird dadurch eine unvoreingenommene, also von dem jeweiligen Gegenstand bzw. der jeweiligen Spracherwerbstheorie unabhängige Hypothesenprüfung ermöglicht. Dies ist insofern von Bedeutung, als dass die aktuelle Debatte rund um den kindlichen Spracherwerb durch Heterogenität und Konfrontation der unterschiedlichen Sprachtheorien geprägt wird.
