While not on the scale of their European and North American counterparts, gays and lesbians have become increasingly open and visible in urban Latin America, with large public displays recently held in Buenos Aires, Mexico, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. This increased visibility is forcing the general public to come to terms with what has, until now, been a silent part of their population. This book takes a personal look at the activities of Latin America's homosexual community, and the varying perception of it by the populace as a whole. c. Book News Inc.

Because of political, cultural, or economic difficulties in their homelands, Latin American writers have often sought refuge abroad. Their independent searches for a haven in which to write often ended in Paris, long a city of writes in exile. This is more than solely a group biography of these writers or an explication of material they wrote about Paris; it is also a luminous account of the work they wrote while in Paris, often based in their homelands. It explores how Paris reacted to this wave of Latin American writers and how these writers absorbed Parisian influences and welded them to their own traditions setting the stage for immense success and power of works coming from Central and South America over the last half of the twentieth century.

Entiendes?

"¿Entiendes?" is literally translated as "Do you understand? Do you get it?" But those who do "get it" will also hear within this question a subtler meaning: "Are you queer? Are you one of us?" The issues of gay and lesbian identity represented by this question are explored for the first time in the context of Spanish and Hispanic literature in this groundbreaking anthology. Combining intimate knowledge of Spanish-speaking cultures with contemporary queer theory, these essays address texts that share both a common language and a concern with lesbian, gay, and bisexual identities. Using a variety of approaches, the contributors tease the homoerotic messages out of a wide range of works, from...

Across Borders

While work in theology and religious studies by scholars in Latin America and by Latino/a scholars in the United States has made substantial contributions to the current scholarship in the field, there are few projects where scholars from these various contexts are working together. Across Borders:Latin Perspectives in the Americas Reshaping Religion, Theology, and Life is unique, as it brings leading scholars from both worlds into the conversation. The chapters of this book deal with the complexities of solidarity, the intersections of the popular and the religious, the example of Afro-Cubanisms, the meaning of popular liberation struggles, Hispanic identity formation at the U.S. border, and the unique promise of studying religion and theology in the tensions between North and South in the Americas.
