Urban Development and Regional Identity in the Eastern Roman Provinces, 50 BC-AD 250
This study presents a comparative treatment of four East Roman provinces in the period 50 BC-AD 250 (Aphrodisias and Ephesos in Turkey, Athens in Greece, and Gerasa in Jordan), and it examines the instrumental factors behind regional and local urban developments. It argues that local communities were responsible for the organization and development of public space and buildings, which lends itself to an understanding of self-knowledge in these communities. Through a discussion of the interaction between architectural developments and historical and regional factors, this compelling study examines the interaction between the built environment, the social/political culture, and the urban identity in the eastern Roman Empire.

Lived Religion in the Ancient Mediterranean World
The Lived Ancient Religion project has radically changed perspectives on ancient religions and their supposedly personal or public character. This volume applies and further develops these methodological tools, new perspectives and new questions. The religious transformations of the Roman Imperial period appear in new light and more nuances by comparative confrontation and the integration of many disciplines. The contributions are written by specialists from a variety of disciplinary contexts (Jewish Studies, Theology, Classics, Early Christian Studies) dealing with the history of religion of the Mediterranean, West-Asian, and European area from the (late) Hellenistic period to the (early) Middle Ages and shaped by their intensive exchange. The workshops were held at Aarhus University, Denmark, under the auspices of the Palmyra Portrait Project in October 2016 and February 2017. During the workshops concerning women, children and family constellations, various aspects of representations of women and children as well as the wider family groups within which they were shown in Palmyra were explored, as well as the implications these might have carried in relation to the Palmyrene family structure and wider Palmyrene society. It is widely agreed that the birth of modern archaeology happened in Denmark in the 19th century. A particular set of intellectual and material circumstances came together in a small northern European country to forge the making of a new academic field of enquiry. The history of this event has been widely constructed from the vantage points of certain schools and subjects. This anthology aims to demonstrate that the early Danish pioneers saw little distinction between the study of classical antiquity, the middle ages, prehistory, ethnography and human evolution, nor between humanities and natural sciences. The contributions show how Danish scholars remained key actors and delivered pioneering achievements in the archaeology of Europe, the Mediterranean and the Middle East. In many cases, a full appreciation of their work has been blinded by the disciplinary boundaries of post-war academia. Rediscovering the intimate links between what was later to become separate subjects within the work of individual scholars, this book recasts the history of archaeology in the 19th and early 20th centuries as a joint quest for a global understanding of human history.
