Christian Democracy in Europe Since 1945
For the first time, this book reveals the actual roles of the Christian Democratic (CD) parties in postwar Europe from a pan-European perspective. It shows how Christian Democratic parties became the dominant political force in postwar Western Europe, and how the European People's Party is currently the largest group in the European Parliament. CD parties and political leaders like Adenauer, Schuman and De Gasperi played a particularly important role in the evolution of the 'core Europe' of the EEC/EC after 1945. Key chapters address the same questions about the parties' membership and social organization; their economic and social policies; and their European and international policies during the Cold War. The book also includes two survey chapters setting out the international political context for CD parties and comparing their postwar development, and two chapters on their transnational party cooperation after 1945. This is the companion volume to Political Catholicism in Europe 1918-1945.
Adolf Loos
Viennese architect Adolf Loos was one of the most important pioneers of the European Modern Movement. Born in 1870, he was an early opponent of the decorative trends of Art Nouveau, believing instead that architecture devoid of ornament represented pure and lucid thought. His rationalist design theories were put into practice in the Karntner Bar, Vienna (1907), Steiner House, Vienna (1920), and Villa Muller, Prague (1930). Surprisingly, there is no other monograph on Loos in English currently available. Adolf Loos joins Adalberto Libera and Albert Kahn in Princeton Architectural Press's historical monographs series and presents this great modernist's complete works through numerous illustrations.
Jews, Antisemitism and Culture in Vienna
Originally published in 1987, this book explores the emergence, structure and ultimate fate of the Viennese Jewish community. Thirteen eminent specialists on Viennese social, political and cultural history combine to cover a wide variety of topics, including the social and psychological causes of the highly successful and intellectually creative position held by the Jewish community as a minority within the larger Viennese society. They also analyse the conservative politics of the pre-1914 Jewish community, and their relationship both to Zionism and to Austro-Marxism. The book also traces the continuities with the past in interwar Austria and analyse the stages leading to the expulsion, expropriation and annihilation of the Jews in Nazi-dominated Austria. The book concludes with an examination of post-Holocaust antisemitism in Vienna.

The First World War did not end in November 1918. In Russia and Eastern Europe it finished up to a year earlier, and both there and elsewhere in Europe it triggered conflicts that lasted down to 1923.
