This textbook is about economically competitive renewable energy sources (RES), including onshore and offshore wind, solar and small-hydro plants, and focusing on the electricity production from these sources. Clearly divided into sections discussing the different RES, the textbook begins with an introduction of AC electrical circuits, aimed at non-electrical engineers. It then offers an economic assessment of renewable energy projects, before discussing photovoltaic technologies and concentrated solar power. It explores the theory of wind to power conversion, electrical generator types and electrical part of offshore systems. Presenting theoretical concepts related to the electrical framework associated with RES, alongside examples and solved problems, this book will clearly introduce the topic of renewable power sources to graduate students, researchers and practitioners alike. After reading the book, readers will be equipped to make a preliminary techno-economic assessment of a RES.
Garrincha was the unlikeliest of footballers - with a ruight leg that turned inwards and a left that turned out, he looked as if he could barely walk, but with a ball at his feet he had the poise of an angel. He played for the loove of the game, uninterested in money, and ignoring tactical advice. And he was as wild off the pitch as he was mesmerizing on it - mischievous, audacious and dripping with sex appeal. It was his affair and subsequent marriage to the singer Elza Soares that caught the imagination of a nation and samba made them the toast of 1960s Rio. But by the age of forty-nine, Garrincha was dead, destropyed by the excessesn that made him so compelling."--Back cover.
The aviation industry presents a unique conundrum with the complex relationship between government oversight and business management. While the aviation industry operates in a business-oriented manner, a considerable number of aviation companies and airports worldwide are still government-owned. The COVID-19 pandemic has accentuated the pivotal role of governments in the industry, highlighting the need for a comprehensive understanding of this interaction, given the sector's massive economic influence and the extensive investment required. The need for an in-depth exploration of this liaison has never been more pressing. Strategic Management and Policy in the Global Aviation Industry offers ...
Bossa nova is one of the most popular musical genres in the world. Songs such as “The Girl from Ipanema” (the fifth most frequently played song in the world), “The Waters of March,” and “Desafinado” are known around the world. Bossa Nova—a number-one bestseller when originally published in Brazil as Chega de Saudade—is a definitive history of this seductive music. Based on extensive interviews with Antonio Carlos Jobim, Jo+o Gilberto, and all the major musicians and their friends, Bossa Nova explains how a handful of Rio de Janeiro teenagers changed the face of popular culture around the world. Now, in this outstanding translation, the full flavor of Ruy Castro’s wisecracking, chatty Portuguese comes through in a feast of detail. Along the way he introduces a cast of unforgettable characters who turned Gilberto’s singular vision into the sound of a generation.
Occupying what is arguably the most breathtakingly beautiful site in the world, the people of Rio - the Cariocas - tell their stories: of cannibals charming European intellectuals; of elegant slaves and their shabby masters; of how a casual chat between two people drinking coffee on Avenida Rio Branco could affect world coffee markets; of an awesome beach life; of favelas, drugs, police, carnival, football and music. With his own Carioca good humour and spellbinding storytelling gifts, Ruy Castro brings the reader thrillingly close to the flames.

This Brief discusses impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Portuguese tourism sector. Taking into account real-world conditions and the importance of the tourism sector for the Portuguese economy, this book highlights the economic contexts of tourism in Portugal at the regional and municipal levels, discussing pre-pandemic economic frameworks and projecting potential implications for the future. Using data provided by Statistics Portugal, the Brief performs econometric analysis on three cases: new paradigms for overnight stays and guests, changes in tourism revenues and prospective alternatives, and a comparison of effects on changes in number of guests and overnight stays at the regional level. Providing cutting edge analysis of a dynamic global situation, this Brief will be useful for researchers interested in tourism economics and European economics as well as policymakers and industry professionals.
Energy systems are transiting from conventional energy systems to modernized and smart energy systems. This Special Issue covers new advances in the emerging technologies for modern energy systems from both technical and management perspectives. In modern energy systems, an integrated and systematic view of different energy systems, from local energy systems and islands to national and multi-national energy hubs, is important. From the customer perspective, a modern energy system is required to have more intelligent appliances and smart customer services. In addition, customers require the provision of more useful information and control options. Another challenge for the energy systems of the future is the increased penetration of renewable energy sources. Hence, new operation and planning tools are required for hosting renewable energy sources as much as possible.
