The Transparent Girl and Other Stories

Stephanie Corinna Bille, a Swiss short-story writer, playwright, poet, and novelist and winner of the 1975 French Prix Concourt, is often considered the major contemporary Franco-Swiss woman writer. As a writer, Bille excelled at rendering the woman's experience. She stands out as an elegant writer, a compassionate observer of early twentieth-century Catholic rural life, and a precise painter of the beauty of the natural environment. In over thirty volumes of creative writing, she favored short narrative forms from five lines to eighty pages, exploiting her dreams and fantasies in the wake of the Surrealist revolution. Yet despite her many successes, little has been published about her life and work in English. In The Transparent Girl and Other Stories Monika Giacoppe and Christiane Makward have assembled and translated a magnificent collection of Bille's work that strives to fill this void. Within these pages they expose an English-speaking audience--many for the first time--to Bille's exotic, captivating, mystical, and sexually provocative stories, which will delight scholars of Literature, Francophone Studies, and Women's Studies.

Exiguity

For the past four centuries, five major languages have dominated Western literature. This domination has excluded or rendered marginal all other literatures — has, in effect, diminished literary diversity and endangered the existence of the literature of “smaller” cultures. In an illuminating defence for their preservation, François Paré reflects on the diversity of cultures and languages in the world and on the fantastic richness of “smaller” literatures. He offers us memorable samples of this diversity and, in his original and thought-provoking style, tantalizes us with critical musings on the complexity of “marginal” literature and the regenerative power it can offer. Exiguity: Reflections on the Margins of Literature reflects Paré’s deep involvement with the development and preservation of minority cultures in Canada.

From Multiculturalism to Hybridity

From Multiculturalism to Hybridity: New Approaches to Teaching Switzerland places Switzerland within the context of transnational labor migration and examines how this German-, French-, Italian-, and Romansh-speaking nation is being transformed by the influx of migrants from all over the world who now constitute a fifth of the population. This dynamic mixture of cultures and races is embodied by a new generation of citizens who call themselves “Secondas and Secondos,” the second generation. Today, Switzerland is leading all industrial nations in growth potential and economic benefits from migration (OECD). The articles in this volume analyze the challenges, successes, and ongoing struggl...
