Containing the papers presented at the second conference organised on island sustainability by the Wessex Institute of Technology, the book addresses the massive scale of seasonal population mobility that has such a profound effect on coastal regions and islands. The problems that result from large temporary increases in population are especially serious for islands and archipelagos, which have limited resources and possibilities of developing supporting infrastructures. Most islands cannot provide all the resources required by a large seasonal tourist population; in many cases basic requirements such as water and energy, as well as agricultural produce, must therefore be imported. Authorities need to carefully evaluate the impact of large seasonal population increases on the community and the resulting socio-economic factors, as well as issues related to transportation and communication, all of which should be part of an overall strategy. The topics covered include: Tourism Impact and Strategies, Community Issues, Changing Climate and Environment, Infrastructure, Transport Issues, Natural Resources, Energy Issues, Risk and Safety, Waste Management and Island Services.

Improving Exercise Testing Methods and Interpretation in Human Health and Diseases

Exercise testing is a versatile tool for health purposes. When used in combination with specific devices and sensors, it can provide valuable diagnostic and prognostic information in a wide range of populations. Exercise testing outcomes are also useful for training prescriptions and defining responses to clinical trials evaluating interventions. Whole-body maximal tests (e.g., cardiopulmonary exercise testing), field tests (e.g., walking tests), and modalities isolating a muscle group (e.g., isokinetic endurance testing) all have their advantages and limits and should be viewed as complementary. Recent advances in wearable technology and artificial intelligence provide unique opportunities ...

Sustainable Tourism VI contains the proceedings of the sixth International Conference in this successful series on Sustainable Tourism. Tourism has become a major international industry, with many countries all over the world relying on the income it produces. Its economic advantages as a major source of finance and employment frequently leads to its active promotion by governments and other institutions, independent of the consequences on the environment, ecology and social structure of affected regions. Issues concerned with achieving environmental social and economic sustainability of tourism alongside the governance mechanisms needed to support sustainable tourism are highlighted. Also d...

Contains papers presented at the 1st International Conference on Island Sustainability organized on the Island of Brac, dealing with projects, initiatives and experiences related to different island issues. By using the experience of economically developed island environments, it is possible to learn how to ensure the development of other island communities, not only to prevent depopulation but to encourage new settlement. Those projects will serve as guidelines for other initiatives in less developed islands, adapting those experiences to specific regional, cultural and socio-economic characteristics.

Containing papers presented at the Ninth International Conference in the well-established conference series on Ecosystems and Sustainable Development, this book originates from the work of the late Nobel laureate, Ilya Prigogine, and challenges us to develop the new science of “ecodynamics,” integrating thermodynamics, ecology and economics. It covers not only novel research related to ecological problems from all over the world, but also new emergent ideas arising from the cross fertilisation of different disciplines, including evolutionary thermodynamics and biodiversity, structures in ecosystems modelling and landscapes, mathematical models and eco-informatics, to mention but a few.Th...

In recent years, the world of civil engineering has been changing considerably. Within the many obstacles, barriers, and opportunities, significant challenges should be considered for the future of civil engineering. With the contribution of geoinformatics, several scientific areas associated with civil engineering experienced rapid technological evolution. Considering these challenges, the future of civil engineering can be portrayed. Geoinformatics in Support of Urban Politics and the Development of Civil Engineering portrays the evolution of the world of civil engineering, what happened in recent decades, what will develop in the future, and what the path will be. This work characterizes the different academic areas of civil engineering, demonstrating its evolution. Covering topics such as landslide susceptibility mapping, spatial data, and local development, this premier reference source is an essential resource for policymakers, environmentalists, scientists, technicians, decision makers, engineers, students and educators of higher education, librarians, researchers, and academicians.
