This book is a completely revised new edition of the definitive reference on disorders of hemoglobin. Authored by world-renowned experts, the book focuses on basic science aspects and clinical features of hemoglobinopathies, covering diagnosis, treatment, and future applications of current research. While the second edition continues to address the important molecular, cellular, and genetic components, coverage of clinical issues has been significantly expanded, and there is more practical emphasis on diagnosis and management throughout. The book opens with a review of the scientific underpinnings. Pathophysiology of common hemoglobin disorders is discussed next in an entirely new section devoted to vascular biology, the erythrocyte membrane, nitric oxide biology, and hemolysis. Four sections deal with α and β thalassemia, sickle cell disease, and related conditions, followed by special topics. The second edition concludes with current and developing approaches to treatment, incorporating new agents for iron chelation, methods to induce fetal hemoglobin production, novel treatment approaches, stem cell transplantation, and progress in gene therapy.
Applied Echocardiography in CAD is a comprehensive guide to imaging techniques for a variety of heart conditions. Divided into two sections; section A covers the fundamentals of imaging techniques, and section B covers the clinical applications of these techniques. Variations of echocardiography in the first section include right heart evaluation, contrast echocardiography, and tissue Doppler imaging. Section B is sub-divided into heart conditions including acute coronary syndrome, stable angina, advanced heart failure, and coronary artery diseases in paediatric age groups. Each topic begins with a clinical scenario. Applied Echocardiography in CAD provides an excellent source of reference for cardiologists and residents faced with these conditions day-to-day. Key Points Comprehensive guide to imaging techniques for a variety of heart conditions Two sections cover the fundamentals of imaging, and clinical applications for CAD Excellent day-to-day reference book for cardiologists and residents

This book analyses India’s relations with its neighbours (China, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka) and other world powers (USA, UK, and Russia) over a span of 60 years. It traces the roots of independent India’s foreign policy from the Partition and its fallout, its nascent years under Nehru, and non-alignment to the influence of economic liberalization and globalization. The volume delves into the underlying reasons of persistent problems confronting India’s foreign policy-makers, as well as foreign-policy interface with defence and domestic policies. This book will be indispensable to students, scholars and teachers of South Asian studies, international relations, political science, and modern Indian history.
Covering energy-saving technologies and how these are incorporated into component design, this book is relevant to many industries, including automotive engineering, and discusses the topical issue of sustainability in industry. This book details recent fundamental developments in the field of tribology in industrial systems. Tribology has advanced significantly in recent years. Tribological performance depends on external parameters such as contact pressure at the interface, system temperature, relative speed between bodies and contact behaviour. Through ensuring that mechanisms work in an energy-efficient manner and minimizing wear, engineers should seek to implement the study of tribology...

Non-scalar variational problems appear in different fields. In geometry, for in stance, we encounter the basic problems of harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds and of minimal immersions; related questions appear in physics, for example in the classical theory of a-models. Non linear elasticity is another example in continuum mechanics, while Oseen-Frank theory of liquid crystals and Ginzburg-Landau theory of superconductivity require to treat variational problems in order to model quite complicated phenomena. Typically one is interested in finding energy minimizing representatives in homology or homotopy classes of maps, minimizers with prescribed topological singularities, topological...
The availability of 3D imaging in cardiology has provided a large flow of information to the clinical management of low and high risk patients. However, the correlation among different findings such as perfusion, metabolism or wall motion abnormalities is difficult and mostly qualitative. In fact labs may return information that is frequently redundant or even conflicting due to lack of correlation between different techniques in imaging. The complexity of the problem is can be reflected in the technical differences of the many imaging techniques, for example, echocardiography is based on ultrasound while angiography is based on x-rays. This text collects the experiences of different specialists, starting from the basic concepts of cardiac imaging, analyzing differences and similarities between invasive and non-invasive techniques, challenged versus the computer point of view, in order to obtain an operative efficient guide in the field of image fusion.
