The collection consists of a bound diary documenting Porter's activities from March 24, 1852 through March 15, 1858; a small group of pages torn from another diary that document his Salmon River adventure; and 29 foolscap sheets (written on both sides) containing an expanded version of his diary with added details and observations; and a typed transcript of the expanded version. There is also a 1915 letter to Herbert Hunt describing the genealogy of his first wife, Mary Francis McCullough (1838-1899). The original diary is chronological, usually written on the date, but not daily, but sometimes written after some time had elapsed. It contains much detail on his life and the journey to California and his experiences as a daguerreotypist and in the gold fields. The eight loose pages document his Salmon River venture.
