Dialogue & Daggers

The Delhi Sultanate has captured the political imagination ever since its inception at the end of the twelfth century. In various way, both direct and indirect it sets the tone of life in the modern day Indian polity; especially in terms of the questions it raises regarding the relations betweens religious identities (Hindu and Muslim), and how these shape the fortunes of the Indian nation to this day. It can be argued that one of the reasons why the Delhi Sultanate and subsequent Muslim ruled polities in India have raised so much acrimony, is due to the notion that the establishment of these often violent polities and their development represented a sense of abrupt change from pre-Islamic I...

‘Is Sharma a Quiet Don?’ is the surreal story, rather a high voltage thriller on theft and misuse of nuclear technology under the disguise of Research and Development (R&D). Venkatesh Sharma, a simple South Indian Brahmin is an Expat (Expatriate Executive) business man in Haipon, a nuclear armed country. He lives and works happily in Haipon as a well-recognised and well respected Expat. It all changes one day. Venkatesh realizes that he is quietly drawn into a terrorist intrigue to smuggle some crucial nuclear secrets from a key industry in the US. He scuttles their plans smartly in the last minute. But he gets caught in the vicious dragnet of self-survival which entails his keeping the terrorists happy on one side and helping the Haiponese Government to nab the terrorists at the same time. The terrorists use the hallowed R&D labs of Haipon for their nefarious designs and race to their goal. The game involves high level honchos of Haiponese Government and hence is sophisticated and involved, to say the least. Can Venkatesh Sharma satisfy the hidden agendas of all the stakeholders, namely the terrorists, Haiponese government and himself?

The Sixties and Beyond

The Sixties and Beyond

In the decades following the Second World War, North America and Western Europe experienced widespread secularization and dechristianization; many scholars have pinpointed the 1960s as a pivotally important period in this decline. The Sixties and Beyond examines the scope and significance of dechristianization in the western world between 1945 and 2000. A thematically wide-ranging and interdisciplinary collection, The Sixties and Beyond uses a framework that compares the social and cultural experiences of North America and Western Europe during this period. The internationally based contributors examine the dynamic place of Christianity in both private lives and public discourses and practices by assessing issues such as gender relations, family life, religious education, the changing relationship of church and state, and the internal dynamics of religious organizations. The Sixties and Beyond is an excellent contribution to the burgeoning scholarship on the 1960s as well as to the history of Christianity in the western world.

EKG Teaching Rounds

This book is a short-form guide designed to fill a training gap in medical education. It is a reference that will help interns and junior residents understand and appropriately respond to real world situations that they will be encountering as newly minted physicians. The book outlines a basic methodology for electrocardiogram (EKG) interpretation and sets a framework for the junior resident physician to use to approach every EKG. It describes common dysrhythmias that residents will often encounter, on the wards, in the emergency department, and in clinic. It uses many high-quality images to prime junior learners in the interpretation and recognition of high yield EKGs. Chapters address comm...

Bacterial Pathogens and their Virulence Factors contains a detailed description of 32 major bacterial pathogens that affect human health and their associated virulence determinants. Chapter 1 gives an overview of the different types and classes of general virulence factors involved in host cell adherence and invasion, dissemination within the host, host cell damage, and evasion of host defense systems, as well as mechanisms by which these virulence factors are regulated. Chapters 2 through 33 give concise descriptions of the disease states associated with the 32 bacterial genera and their major pathogenic species, along with an in-depth description of the individual virulence factors that have been found to be functionally involved in pathogenicity. A detailed bibliography derived from primary literature and review articles accompanies each of these chapters, allowing the reader to delve more deeply into individual pathogens and their virulence determinants. Chapter 34 discusses the exciting possibilities and initial successes of using detailed information on a pathogen’s virulence toolkit to design new therapeutics aimed at specific virulence traits.
