Die Berechtigung des Begriffes "Nation" wird glücklicherweise zunehmend infrage gestellt, allerdings gibt es nach wie vor ein Konstrukt, das wir "Österreich" nennen und dem wir eine bestimmte Geschichte und – zunehmend diverse – kulturelle Identität zuschreiben. Das vorliegende Heft möchte keine Festschreibung, wohl aber eine aktuelle Befragung dieser "Imagination Österreich" durchführen, auch wenn das ein fragmentarisches und kontingentes Unterfangen sein wird, das notwendigerweise auch immer wieder in ironischer Distanzierung zu sich selbst betrieben werden muss. Was dieses Heft dennoch leisten kann, sind Einblicke in das kulturelle Leben in Österreich, deshalb werden hier aktuelle Entwicklungen in den Bereichen Literatur, Tanz, Film und Musik gezeigt und auch in didaktischen bzw. bildungspolitischen Kontexten betrachtet. Zudem eröffnet das Heft vielfältige Perspektiven auf das Themenfeld Sprache – Identität – Zugehörigkeit und stellt damit nicht zuletzt die Frage nach der (historischen und gegenwärtigen) Konstituierung eines "Wir".
