This volume contains two-page abstracts of the 482 papers presented at the latest conference on the subject, in Alexandroupolis, Greece. The accompanying CD contains the full length papers. The abstracts of the fifteen plenary lectures are included at the beginning of the book. The remaining 467 abstracts are arranged in 23 tracks and 28 special symposia/sessions with 225 and 242 abstracts, respectively. The papers of the tracks have been contributed from open call, while the papers of the symposia/sessions have been solicited by the respective organizers.

The first half of the twentieth century was an era of deep-seated upheaval for Austria: Two world wars, several changes of political system including a temporary loss of national autonomy, economic and monetary crises, and rapid technological progress came together to create a massive societal transformation. Each of these different aspects left its traces on the nation’s educational system, thus also influencing the development of the TU Wien. This book, part 1 of volume 1, illustrates the most important developmental aspects of the history of the TU Wien from the early twentieth century to the end of the First Republic and the "Ständestaat".
A library was planned for the Polytechnic Institute from the very start, although the scale of the initial facility was quite small. Over the course of two hundred years, the University Library of the TU Wien has grown into Austria’s largest science and technology library. Today, the facility contributes to ensuring that the scientists and students of this modern research university are optimally supplied with literature for research and teaching, as well as being open to the general public. This volume attempts to present different aspects of the work and future challenges faced by this modern scientific library, as well as highlighting the diverse paths that libraries in general, and the TU Wien Library in particular, have followed over the past decades.
This volume takes a look at the past – at the last 50 years in particular – and a look at the present, painting a picture of how the Imperial Royal Polytechnic Institute, founded in 1815, became the Technische Universität Wien – the "TU Wien" – with the launch of the 1975 University Organisation Act, and has increasingly developed into a research university ever since. Contemporaries from the years when the TU Wien was still the TH in Vienna have a place to tell their stories in this volume, alongside articles on interfaculty research facilities and service centres that support research activities and transfer of research results in accordance with the TU Wien's motto, “Technology for people”. One of the main goals of this book is to not only inform readers, but also to amuse them a bit as they peruse the pages of the volume.
The history of the Faculty of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering is as old as that of the TU Wien. As intended by its founders, the former Imperial Royal Polytechnic Institute worked closely together with industry and business, addressing topics from the very beginning that one would today assign to the Faculty of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. In correspondence with overall technological progress, the research topics and teaching fields of the faculty have undergone continual, often even revolutionary, development and change. This commemorative volume provides both a historical overview of the evolution of the faculty as well as exemplary highlights and striking characteristics of the developments of the last 50 years in particular.
