The first half of the twentieth century was an era of deep-seated upheaval for Austria: Two world wars, several changes of political system including a temporary loss of national autonomy, economic and monetary crises, and rapid technological progress came together to create a massive societal transformation. Each of these different aspects left its traces on the nation’s educational system, thus also influencing the development of the TU Wien. This book, part 1 of volume 1, illustrates the most important developmental aspects of the history of the TU Wien from the early twentieth century to the end of the First Republic and the "Ständestaat".

From Technische Hochschule to research university
This volume takes a look at the past – at the last 50 years in particular – and a look at the present, painting a picture of how the Imperial Royal Polytechnic Institute, founded in 1815, became the Technische Universität Wien – the "TU Wien" – with the launch of the 1975 University Organisation Act, and has increasingly developed into a research university ever since. Contemporaries from the years when the TU Wien was still the TH in Vienna have a place to tell their stories in this volume, alongside articles on interfaculty research facilities and service centres that support research activities and transfer of research results in accordance with the TU Wien's motto, “Technology for people”. One of the main goals of this book is to not only inform readers, but also to amuse them a bit as they peruse the pages of the volume.
Eine Sammlung von außerordentlicher Geschlossenheit/A Collection of Unusual Completeness
Die Rektorengalerie der TU Wien, die luckenlos vom ersten Rektor des Jahres 1866 an bis in die unmittelbare Vergangenheit reicht, stellt auch formal eine ungewohnlich geschlossene Sammlung dar. Ausgehend von der Initiative des Professors fur Figuren- und Landschaftszeichnen Wenzel O. Noltsch wurde sie in der Folge stetig erganzt und erweitert. Sie reflektiert damit mehr als 130 Jahre der Geschichte der TU Wien, aber auch des gesellschaftlichen, kulturellen und asthetischen Wandels. Der vorliegende Band prasentiert die Portrats und Kurzbiographien der bisher 107 Rektoren der TU Wien und ihrer Vorgangerinstitutionen. Erganzend werden Entstehung, Geschichte und kunstlerische Ausgestaltung der Sammlung erlautert.
Die Technik und die Musen / Technology and the Muses
The articles compiled in this volume address the manifold relationships between technology, art, culture, and science that have emerged throughout the 200 years of the history of the TU Wien. After reflecting in general on the interaction of art and technology, and their convergence at the “Vienna Chamber of Wonders 2015” exhibition, the connections between the members and graduates of the TU Wien and its predecessor institutions to the artistic, literary, and especially musical life of the time will be examined. Further articles are dedicated to the role of the Polytechnic Institute and the TH/TU Wien in the early development of photography and film, as well as to the efforts of the TH in spreading technical knowledge to the people during the first decades of the 20th century as part of "University Extension".
Im Schatten der Eule / In the Shadow of the Owl
A library was planned for the Polytechnic Institute from the very start, although the scale of the initial facility was quite small. Over the course of two hundred years, the University Library of the TU Wien has grown into Austria’s largest science and technology library. Today, the facility contributes to ensuring that the scientists and students of this modern research university are optimally supplied with literature for research and teaching, as well as being open to the general public. This volume attempts to present different aspects of the work and future challenges faced by this modern scientific library, as well as highlighting the diverse paths that libraries in general, and the TU Wien Library in particular, have followed over the past decades.
Traveling Between Worlds
In Traveling between Worlds, six authors explore the connectedness between Germans and Americans in the nineteenth century and their mutual impact on transatlantic history. Despite the ocean between them, these two groups of people were linked not only by the emigration from one to the other but also by ongoing interactions, especially among their intellectuals. Christof Mauch's introduction examines the history of the German-American exchange and of cultural exchanges in general. Focusing on various aspects of the German-American relationship, Eberhard Bruning, John T. Walker, Thomas Adam, Gabriele Lingelbach, Andrew P. Yox, and Christiane Harzig examine the cultural and communicative exchanges that occurred both between the two countries and within them. Topics such as travel, cultural interpretation, ideological and intellectual transfer, the immigrant experience, and German-American poetry are all considered. Traveling between Worlds demonstrates that exchange was facilitated and maintained by ordinary individuals such as teachers and scholars, immigrants and natives, and held implications that last to this day.

Oswald Menghin
The fundamental idea of this book is to show – based on the example of Oswald Menghin, Minister of Education of the National Socialist Austrian “Anschluss”-government, and the networks surrounding him – how science and politics were interwoven in Austria in the first half of the 20th century and how the ideas and networks created in that milieu outlasted the alleged caesurae of this period and found continuation in post-war South America. As Menghin traversed an astonishing number of political upheavals and changes – time after time in exalted positions –, his biography may be considered as paradigmatic for the Age of Extremes. The following aspects form the core interest of this book: (1) Menghin’s position in the political and scientific field, as well as the interconnection between these spheres. (2) The transnational entanglement between the two central areas of Menghin’s geographic spheres of action. (3) Continuities and changes both in Menghin’s biography and in a broader political and scientific context in Austria and Argentina. (4) Menghin’s scope of action and the extent of his responsibility for crucial and often dire developments in all these facets.
