The first battle of the Revolution was fought in the streets of Brooklyn in New York City on August 22, 1776. At that time the battlefield was a farming community. The battle was a decisive defeat for the newly formed American Army but were not destroyed as the British had hoped. The American Army escaped destruction by a combination of luck and the initial skill of Washington in the withdrawal of the his army in the middle of a foggy night across the East River.
