Since the time of its inception, the field of aviation has rapidly grown in both importance and popularity. The acceptance and recognition of women's participation and achievements in this activity, however, did not develop with nearly the same speed. The first biographical history of women pilots in Alaska, this work explores the challenges faced by women of Alaska as they pursued roles in aviation--something that had long been considered part of "the men's world". Beginning in 1927 with Marvel Crosson and reaching to the present day, 37 adventurous and personal tales are offered, including that of an ultralight flyer, the first woman to become U.S. Aerobatic Champion, a parachute jumper, the first woman to fly in a small airplane over the North Pole and an Iditarod dog musher. Questions about why these women chose to fly; where they learned; when they soloed; what it meant to them to become a pilot; what challenges they faced in such a non-traditional role; and why they chose the skies of Alaska are addressed as these intriguing stories are told.

Double-Sided Love

Until now, Sumner has concentrated on writing three nonfiction books, about the accomplishments and challenges of Alaska's women pilots, and mountain climbers. This book about adoption and reunion is her first fiction book on a subject she is very passionate about because she is an adoptee. Sumner began searching for her birth mother in 1980 and has never located her. However, in January, 1994, she made her initial contact with Harley Shuffler, who was Juanita's brother from a family of ten children. Juanita has not been in contact with any of her family members since 1980. Her whereabouts unknown even today. The author and her adoptive mother never bonded in spite of Sumner's efforts to love and understand her. Creating dialogue and open discussion about adoption is the author's goal. School Psychologist Peg Montieth, MS, said, "All sides in adoption learn and grow from knowing other people's stories. This book is very empowering."

Women in Blue

A Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People 2017 They were called sleuths in skirts, guardian mothers, copettes, and police in petticoats. It would be a long time—well over 150 years—before women in law enforcement were known simply as police officers. Balancing the stories of trailblazers from the past with those of today's dedicated officers, chiefs, FBI agents, and forensics experts, this collection of riveting biographies traces the evolution of women in policing. Women in Blue inspires readers to value those who broke through barriers—often enduring ridicule and discrimination as they fought for equality—while original interviews shed light on the daily challenges, rewa...

Four-time Olympian Nina Kemppel said, "You have to believe in yourself, whether it's at the Olympics before a crowd of 100,000 people, or alone on Mt. McKinley." Reaching the summit of Alaska's highest peak made a lasting impression on each woman in this book, beginning in 1947 with Barbara Washburn. Some of the others include an airline pilot; a twelve-year-old girl; a pulmonary physician; a four-time winner of the Alaska Iditarod; two women who climbed solo; and an opera singer who helped guide others safely up and down the mountain. --Back cover.

Colorado Animals and Their Favorite Vet

I spent almost two years observing everyday events at The Animal Clinic of Woodland Park, Colorado. It began with a visit to Dr. David Volz to determine if our dog Heidi needed surgery because she injured a back leg. Volz explained he'd had knee surgery the week before, thus it was easier to examine our 74-pound dog on the floor. He wanted to x-ray Heidi to be sure his examination concurred with his diagnosis for surgery. While Volz and Heidi were still on the floor I blurted out, "Would you let me write a book about you?" He didn't blink as he calmly said "Yes." We'd never met before that day yet we seemed to comfortably bond. About ten days later we met late one day after he finished work, for coffee and to get acquainted. I gave him a copy of my other books to help him have more awareness of me as a writer. (Later on I learned his wife is a journalist.)
