In scholarly digital editing, the established practice for semantically enriching digital texts is to add markup to a linear string of characters. Graph data-models provide an alternative approach, which is increasingly being given serious consideration. Labelled-property-graph databases, and the W3c's semantic web recommendation and associated standards (RDF and OWL) are powerful and flexible solutions to many of the problems that come with embedded markup. The OCHRE database system is an Online Cultural and Historical Research Environment that enables scholars to record, integrate, analyze, publish, and preserve their data. It provides a comprehensive framework for diverse kinds of information at all stages of research, from initial data acquisition through analysis, publication, and long-term archiving and curation of the data. Although OCHRE was originally designed to meet the needs of cultural and historical research, it can be used equally well in other academic disciplines. Its highly generic and flexible structure accommodates any observations and conceptual distinctions scholars might make in the course of their research, allowing them to retain their own terminology while integrating their information with information that has been recorded using different taxonomies.
