Developmental Biology and Endocrine Research for a Successful Pregnancy

Pregnancy is central to mammals’ life, growth and development. A successful pregnancy is a fundamental step in a healthy life. A healthy pregnancy is not the only prerequisite for species survival and existence but also crucial for the growth and development of livestock and agriculture sectors, as in dairy and beef animals. Studies on developmental biology and developmental endocrinology have a long history of tackling the issue related to pregnancy failure and fertility. The continuous invention and new technologies have contributed to developmental biology and endocrinology research.

Maternal DHA Impact on Child Neurodevelopment

In this Special Issue, we focus on maternal docosahexaenoic acid, 22:6n-3 (DHA), and arachidonic acid, 20:4n-6 (ARA), on children’s neurodevelopment. During the last trimester of gestation and for the first 18 months after birth, both DHA and ARA are preferentially deposited within the cerebral cortex at a rapid rate. The mode of action of these two fatty acids and their derivatives at different structural–functional roles, and their levels in the signaling pathways of the brain have been continuously studied. These fatty acids are also involved in various brain developmental processes; however, their mechanistic cross talks are not yet clearly known. Recent data suggest that there may be a need for a balanced proportion of ARA and DHA in infant formula due to their complementary benefits. This review describes the importance of ARA in addition to DHA to support optimal brain development and growth in an infant, and functional roles in the brain.

Evidence-based Functional Foods for Prevention of Age-related Diseases

This book illustrates the recent advancements in the role of functional foods in preventing age-related disorders. It correlates age-related diseases and the effect of dietary compounds from different functional foods, herbs, and nutraceuticals. Notably, the book describes unique nutrition problems in many chronic diseases such as bone disease, cardiovascular disorders, brain disorders, immune disorders, and cancers. The book also discusses the use of functional foods for controlling osteoporosis, improving bone strength, maintaining dental health, controlling obesity, gut health, and maintaining immune function using functional ingredients such as probiotics and prebiotics. Further, it presents the state of the art of aging and nutrigenomics research and the molecular mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of bioactive nutrients on major aging-related disorders. Finally, the book embodies the latest findings and the mechanisms of actions of functional foods in aging and degenerative diseases and their beneficial uses in the aged population.

Human Milk Feeding as a Complex System

The exploding science of human milk, lactation, breastfeeding and human milk feeding has brought us to our current understanding that we are studying a complex system operating at multiple levels: molecular, cellular, physiological, immunological, nutritional, ontological and socio-behavioral and techno-political. Modern research in this field is responding to new scientific questions and emerging policy needs that can leverage technological innovations and sophisticated multidisciplinary approaches. The International Society for the Study of Human Milk and Lactation 2022 international conference brings together professionals from research disciplines (such as anthropology, biochemistry, immunology, molecular biology, maternal and child health and nutrition, physiology, toxicology), health care professionals (such as medical doctors, nurses, midwifes, dieticians, breastfeeding consultants), policy makers and commercial entities that promote, protect and support breastfeeding.

  • Publisher: VSP

This volume documents the Proceedings of the 5th and 6th Symposia on Particles on Surfaces: Detection, Adhesion and Removal, held under the aegis of the Fine Particle Society in Chicago (May 6--9, 1996) and Dallas (April 1--3, 1998), respectively. The technical programs clearly reflected an interest and need to ameliorate the existing methods and to devise new and more efficient ways to detect, analyze and characterize particles on surfaces. The removal of particles from a host of surfaces was especially highlighted; the need to remove smaller and smaller particles was particularly underscored. All manuscripts included in this volume were properly peer reviewed and all were revised before in...

Modi's India

A riveting account of how a popularly elected leader has steered the world's largest democracy toward authoritarianism and intolerance Over the past two decades, thanks to Narendra Modi, Hindu nationalism has been coupled with a form of national-populism that has ensured its success at the polls, first in Gujarat and then in India at large. Modi managed to seduce a substantial number of citizens by promising them development and polarizing the electorate along ethno-religious lines. Both facets of this national-populism found expression in a highly personalized political style as Modi related directly to the voters through all kinds of channels of communication in order to saturate the publi...
