This work connects the study of student life with both the history of the Canadian University as a whole and the role of the university as a career-training institution. Looking at almost 120 years of Canadian history, Charles Levi examines the origins, activities and careers of 1876 members of the executive of the University College Literary and Athletic Society of the University of Toronto from the inception of the College until 1973. Using an intricate quantitative analysis of data from student records and genealogical sources, Levi charts the history of student activities at University College, filling a gap in the historiography of higher education in Canada. In an era when all forms of education are being scrutinized to determine if they are fulfilling their functions, this book shows that the Canadian university has continually adapted to the needs of society as a whole and that Canadian university students have used their educational experiences in innovative ways.
In 1942, the federal government expelled more than 22,000 Japanese Canadians from their homes in British Columbia. From 1942 to 1949, they were dispossessed, sent to incarceration sites, and dispersed across Canada. Over 4,000 were deported to Japan. Cartographies of Violence analyses the effects of these processes for some Japanese Canadian women. Using critical race, feminist, anti-colonial, and cultural geographic theory, Mona Oikawa deconstructs prevalent images, stereotypes, and language used to describe the 'Internment' in ways that masks its inherent violence. Through interviews with women survivors and their daughters, Oikawa analyses recurring themes of racism and resistance, as well as the struggle to communicate what happened. Disturbing and provocative, Cartographies of Violence explores women's memories in order to map the effects of forced displacements, incarcerations, and the separations of family, friends, and communities.

For almost two decades before Canada officially adopted multiculturalism in 1971, a large network of women and their allies in Toronto were promoting pluralism as a city- and nation-building project. Before Official Multiculturalism assesses women as liberal pluralist advocates and activists, critically examining the key roles they played as community organizers, frontline social workers, and promoters of ethnic festivals. The book explores women’s community-based activism in support of a liberal pluralist vision of multiculturalism through an analysis of the International Institute of Metropolitan Toronto, a postwar agency that sought to integrate newcomers into the mainstream and promote cultural diversity.
