Rocks, wind, sea, and sky frame a house on the Sardinian coast, and the house frames a family’s life and art, suspended in memory. How does a house shape experience? How does architecture establish a practice of living? Architect Sebastiano Brandolini invites readers on a meditative tour of his family’s house on the Sardinian coast, describing everything from the geology of the rocks beneath, to the history of the surrounding villages, to the way the shifting light measures the day. More than the story of a single summer home written by an accomplished architect, this is a study of how place, the built environment, and daily practice make up our lives, at the most minute level of detail....

He worked in London with Erno Goldfinger and Denys Lasdun in 1960 64 under the strong and lasting influence also of the movements of Modernism and New Brutalism then prevailing in the theoretical discourse in British architecture. His own studio Ponis established in 1964 in Palau, on the Italian island of Sardinia, working since on private, public and urban planning commissions. Many of the architects responsible for modern-day Rome--such as Hadid, Fuksas, Baldeweg, and Meier--have reached international stature. Many contemporary Italian architects--such as King Roselli, Labics, and IaN+--use Rome as a lab for testing their ideas. While some might note the weakness of the residential sector in attracting architectural quality, it is hard to escape the growing attention paid to public spaces and infrastructures. This volume surveys Rome's varied architectural landscape and contains over forty projects and a map, demonstrating how the geography of the city is evolving, and how quality can be found both in the center and on the edge of town.

Kristian Gullichsen, Erkki Kairamo and Timo Vormala have created over the years a partnership grounded on individual differences and on a fundamental agreement on what should be and can be, today, the mission of architecture. Each one of their executions is the description of a small adventure, as well as a familiar place, steeped in recollections and expectations. Whether it be an industrial plant, a town centre or a public housing district, located in a city centre, a suburban district or along the seashore, each design proves that to express an idea what is needed is not rhetorics but clarity. The book ranges from the first less-known buildings of the seventies, still bound to the prefabr...

Sprawltown

Sprawl. The word calls to mind a host of troublesome issues such as city flight, runaway suburban development, and the conversion of farmland to soulless housing developments. In Sprawltown, architectural historian Richard Ingersoll makes the surprising claim that sprawl is an inevitable reality of modern life that should be addressed more thoughtfully and recognized as its own new form of urbanism rather than simply being criticized and condemned. In five thought-provoking chapters, covering topics such as tourism, film, and the automobile, Ingersoll takes the position that any solution to the problems of sprawl—including pressing issues like resource use and energy waste—must take into consideration its undeniable success as a social milieu. No screed against the suburb, this book offers a more sophisticated and nuanced view of the way we think about its rapid development and growth.
