This previously unpublished manuscript tells the story of Brigadier Sean Connolly, O/C of the Longford Brigade, who was fatally wounded in action on 11 March 1921 at Selton Hill, near Mohill (Co. Leitrim), by British forces during the War of Independence. Comdt-General Ernie O'Malley came across the story in interviews with Tan and Civil War survivors in the early 1950s. The account makes Connolly come alive as a person - his schooling, love of music, education, farming family background and devotion to the nationalist cause. O'Malley, who had actually organised the Irish Volunteers in parts of the area and had known many of the local leaders, gives the social setting for the IRA activities and explains the subtle roles of the IRA General HQ, of the Catholic Church and the Anglo-Irish gentry. Most memorably, it describes in detail what the fighting men actually did locally and what a local leader had to do in order to organise his men.

ON EVERY TIDE is a wide-ranging and challenging reassessment of the Irish diaspora. Drawing on the latest ground-breaking research, and his own career-long engagement with the complexities of Irish identity, Sean Connolly reveals the forces that compelled millions of Irish men and women to abandon their homeland, and explores their new lives in America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and elsewhere. What emerges is an Irish story, but also a chapter in world history. Irish emigrants fled a society blighted by poverty and lack of opportunity. But they also became part of a massive population movement, driven by the requirements of an ever more interconnected world economy, that transported the...

British Army on the Rampage (B.A.O.R.)

It’s the autobiographical novels that tell it how it was – warts and all. This is what the British Army really got up to in Belize! British Army on the Rampage is a down-to-earth, witty account of a humble British soldier on his tour of duty in the Carribean country of Belize in 1982. It is the first military account of this operational tour, detailing how the task was carried out by an individual and a 'team of lunatics', under difficult and sometimes stressful conditions. It takes more than training, education, teamwork and leadership to make it through a squaddie’s working day. B.A.O.R. proves that sometimes, it is only with sheer determination, camaraderie and a sense of belonging ...

'Am I seeing things? Did that bottle just disappear into orbit?' Well, let me start at the beginning - Sean Connolly, author of "Wholly Irresponsible Experiments", returns with another assemblage of bizarre and outlandish activities - all in the name of science. Connolly's witty, informative text takes readers on a journey of discovery, but the best thing is that the journey needn't go very far from the kitchen cupboard, the odds-and-ends drawer or the garden shed. Along the way, budding experimenters will learn how to make a submarine, create their own 'Red Sky at Night', and manage a crystal harvest. And that bottle that just kissed the Earth goodbye? Why, it's part of the magic of science, and "Wholly Irresponsible Exploits" lets readers in on the secrets of the rocket fuel. Wholly irresponsible? Well, you could say so. Wholly enthralling, exciting and entertaining? Undoubtedly! And (whisper it) maybe even that other 'e' word - educational.

There are many different types of drugs. Some, in the form of medicines, help to control disease and keep us healthy, such as the substances found naturally in tea and coffee, have a very mild effect. But some people use other drugs that have very different-and often dangerous-effects on both their minds and bodies. Straight Talking offers clear and straightforward information about this last category of drugs. It describes how and where they are produced and used explains the mental and physical effects of using the drugs, and provides details of the risks involved. Through first-hand accounts, this series also explains why people start using drugs and how drug use affects them as well as their families and friends.
