Tailored Treatments in Psoriatic Patients

The cause of psoriasis is still unknown, though exposure to definite agents (throat streptococcal infection), smoking, alcohol consumption, certain medicines (lithium), and local irritation or injury to the skin may be risk factors for persons genetically predisposed to the disease. Psoriasis symptoms can vary extensively, from mild rashes to severe situations. Treatment consists of various modalities used locally on the skin and taken by mouth. This book gathers and presents information on targeted treatments for psoriasis in four chapters. Following the Introductory chapter, Chapter 2 discusses evaluation of patients with psoriasis and recommended clinical approaches; Chapter 3 presents the etiology, differential diagnosis, clinical findings, and treatment of nail psoriasis; Chapter 4 updates the clinical knowledge on phototherapy for treating psoriatic lesions of the tongue; and Chapter 5 considers potential adverse skin reactions in psoriatic patients taking TNF alpha inhibitors.

Recent Advances in Wound Healing

The human wound-healing process could be divided into four discrete phases, which have also been indicated as the hemostasis, the inflammatory, the proliferation, and the remodeling phase. For a wound to be healed efficaciously, all four phases must sequentially happen at an expected time setting. Numerous aspects can hinder one or more stages of this procedure, thus can cause inappropriate or diminished wound healing. This book reviews the recent literature on the most significant factors that affect wound healing and the potential cellular and/or molecular mechanisms involved. The factors discussed include physiology of wound healing, interferon, stem cells and photobiomodulation, chronic venous ulcer, chronic fistula, bionanomaterials, topical antiseptic agents, including silver and sodium hypochlorite solution, diabetic ulcers, and nutritional supplements such as copper.

Body Image

Western culture has increasingly valued physical appearance and in particular slenderness in the last 20 years. Unrealistic targets of thinness and excessive weight loss have led to eating disorders, the idea of obligatory exercise and other mental health problems. The concept of dissatisfaction with one's body image is driven home by images of ultra-thin models appearing in newspapers, magazines and television. This book brings together leading international research in this alarming and growing field.

Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease that starts with lesions that appear red, thick, scaly, and itchy with bilateral and symmetrical distribution. The lesions are most often seen in the scalp, elbows, knees, and genitalia. The extent of the lesions is not always limited to these areas, and in some cases, it may involve larger parts of the skin, as well as nails and joints in some cases. This book presents a comprehensive overview of psoriasis, including clinical aspects, differential diagnosis by dermoscopic devices, comorbidities, immune system changes, methotrexate therapy, and topical innovative molecular targeted therapeutics.

Skin pigmentation disorder is one of the common skin diseases. In general, skin gets its color from melanin pigment, which is produced by melanocytes in the skin. When these cells are damaged, they can negatively affect melanin production. Pigmentation disorders in the skin are classified as hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation. Hyperpigmentation appears due to increased melanin in the skin. Typical hyperpigmentation disorders include post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, melasma, solar lentigines, freckles, and café au lait macules. These conditions are generally benign but can be distressing to patients. Addison's disease and some other endocrine disorders may cause diffuse hyperpigmentation. Hypopigmentation is caused by a decrease in melanin production in the skin. Examples of hypopigmentation include vitiligo, albinism, fungal infections, and post-inflammatory hypopigmentation, for example after burns or psoriasis. The nine chapters in this book discuss the latest clinical and therapeutic findings on the most common skin pigmentation disorders and their effect on patients' quality of life.

Diagnosis & Management of Skin Disorders

Covering both common and uncommon conditions this book highlights an authentic evidence-based approach for the management of skin disorders. It presents the disorders in an alphabetical order and discusses their clinical features followed by a quick exposition of the relevant aetiology and pathogenesis. It then explains clinical diagnosis with the help of photographs vividly illustrating the features of the disorder. Management of the disorder has then been lucidly explained by organising the therapeutic data into a three-layered evidence-based approach. A large number of flowcharts summarising this approach have been included to serve as quick reference points for the busy clinician.
