The Langstaff history goes back many, many generations in England and the name, Langstaff is recorded as early as 1210. The authors have compiled information that has been available, but not easily accessible to the general reader. Within these pages one is able to get a glimpse of the family history, in Durham, England, before the emigration of George and Sarah (Wilson) Langstaff of Staindrop, Durham County, England to Canada in the early 1830's. This record follows some of their descendants from Bruce Co. Ontario, Durham County, Ontario, on to Michigan, Montana, and back to Canada — Alberta and British Columbia. In the pages of this book are stories of many families who have descended from Langstaff and the Brinkman families, of Bruce County, Ontario, who joined in marriage not once, but four times! Big neighboring families and limited travel opportunities frequently ensured that a nearby neighbor would be in the family tree.

Zed and her family move unwillingly from London to a village in Cornwall, in an attempt to support her mother's mental health. Dad says they need a fresh start, but no one's asked Zed what she thinks. She knows she'll never fit into her new school, or make any friends, let alone find someone special. At this rate she'll be lucky to find a phone signal... Maybe their new home will help with Mum's depression, and keep Zed's sister Amy away from her dropout boyfriend, but why does it have to be so remote? Why has the boathouse been locked up for seventy years? Why do the birds living by the estuary fill her with such dread? And what do they WANT? Gradually the family fall apart, and it is only when Zed realises that the local cormorants are playing a part in the disasters that consume them, in revenge for an ancient wrong, that she and Amy start working together to find a solution and call a truce.

A man carries his girlfriend in the left-hand breast pocket of his shirt. During World War II, a young soldier searches the houses and barns of the families with whom he grew up. An astronaut wonders whether she can adapt to life back on earth. In her second collection of short fiction, 100neHundred, Laura Besley explores a kaleidoscope of emotions through 100 stories of exactly 100 words. In these one-hundred stories - each one-hundred words long - Besley captures her characters' universes in vivid detail, their predicaments unspooling and oozing off the page. Besley guides us through these worlds filled with relationships that flounder and flourish, mysterious moments of surrealism, and ha...

Jack Draws Anything

After a family friend bought one of his drawings for 20p, six-year-old Jack came up with the idea to 'draw anything' in return for donations to the hospital that treats his two-year-old brother. His parents set up a website and thought they might make £100. After two weeks, Jack had over 500 picture requests and had raised over £10,000 for the Sick Kids Friends Foundation. Parents Ed and Rose with Jack, Toby and Noah appeared on the Fern Britton Show and Jack's project was featured on Russell Howard's Good News four times. Coverage by STV news, BBC news, and CBBC Newsround have all helped spread the word about this creative and generous little boy. Jack is slowly but steadily drawing the requested pictures which range from a 'dinosaur diving into a pool of jelly' (#1) to 'my (extremely bald) friend Brian dancing like a crazy man' (#80). He doesn't draw every day, only when he wants to, and his parents estimate that he'll finish at the end of August. For the latest drawings, or to make a donation yourself, visit jackdrawsanything.com.

Mouseling's Words

In this lively introduction to the pleasure of words, a timid young mouse's first trip out of the nest becomes a reading adventure. Mouseling has grown up surrounded by words, scraps of paper torn from menus. Once he leaves the nest, he decides that discovering words is his mission in life and finds more words than he can count, spelling and sounding them out, thrilled by each one. The library offers a treasure trove of words, also danger: a cat. When Mouseling realizes that the cat would rather know what's in the books than eat him for dinner, he starts reading aloud to the cat—the best gift he can give in exchange for the world of stories.
