In 1915 Vera Brittain began to wonder whether it was possible to 'make a book out of the very essence of one's self'. In this study, the author moves away from Brittain's already well-documented political passions - socialism, feminism and pacifism - to discuss her enduring fascination with philosophy and the problems surrounding the literary representation of subjectivity. Using the psychoanalytical, philosophical and literary theories known to Brittain as well as some more recent and pertinent theoretical developments, the author examines not only Brittain's explicitly autobiographical writings, but also all of her published novels, The Dark Tide (1923), Not Without Honour (1924), Honourable Estate (1936), Account Rendered (1945) and Born 1925 (1948). This insightful and accessible book details Brittain's innovative writing methods and re-evaluates her contribution to the development of the novel during the early twentieth century. Comparing Grief in French, British and Canadian Great War Fiction (1977-2014) offers a comparative analysis of twenty-three First World War novels. Engaging with such themes as war trauma, facial disfigurement, women’s war identities, communal bonds, as well as the concepts of mourning and post-memory, Anna Branach-Kallas and Piotr Sadkowski identify the dominant trends in recent French, British and Canadian fiction about the Great War. Referring to historical, sociological, philosophical and literary sources, they show how, by both consolidating and contesting national myths, fiction continues to construct the 1914-1918 conflict as a cultural trauma, illuminating at the same time some of our most recent ethical concerns.
As the body of First World War literature continues to grow, women’s experiences of this period remain largely obscure, particularly those of Canadian and Newfoundland women. A Sisterhood of Suffering and Service explores this obscurity and begins to redress it. This innovative collection discusses women’s activities in the workforce, overseas, within the domestic realm, and in literary representations to show that women were not bystanders who were quietly knitting for the duration; rather, they actively participated in wartime society, served their country in a variety of ways, made sacrifices, and were deeply affected by the vagaries of war. Incorporating the experiences of Newfoundland with those of Canada, and looking at girls as well as women, the volume enriches our knowledge of an important era in Canadian nation building and takes a step towards writing women into the historical narratives of the First World War.
