The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence in Education

The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence in Education identifies and confronts key ethical issues generated over years of AI research, development, and deployment in learning contexts. Adaptive, automated, and data-driven education systems are increasingly being implemented in universities, schools, and corporate training worldwide, but the ethical consequences of engaging with these technologies remain unexplored. Featuring expert perspectives from inside and outside the AIED scholarly community, this book provides AI researchers, learning scientists, educational technologists, and others with questions, frameworks, guidelines, policies, and regulations to ensure the positive impact of artificial intelligence in learning.

'Prophet Muhammad', writes Mehdi Aminrazavi in his introduction to this volume, 'was one of the first students of distance learning. He learned about revelation from God through the medium of Gabriel.' Drawing a symbolic correlation between the Prophet and twenty-first-century students participating in a new age of enlightenment offered by Internet technology, Aminrazavi and the contributors to this book explore the pearls and perils of introducting new technologies into Islamic Studies. Oritinally presented at the International Conference on Islamic Studies and E-Learning organised by The Islamic College and Middlesex University in London in 2014, the essays within E-Learning and Islamic St...

FinTech in Financial Inclusion: Machine Learning Applications in Assessing Credit Risk

Recent advances in digital technology and big data have allowed FinTech (financial technology) lending to emerge as a potentially promising solution to reduce the cost of credit and increase financial inclusion. However, machine learning (ML) methods that lie at the heart of FinTech credit have remained largely a black box for the nontechnical audience. This paper contributes to the literature by discussing potential strengths and weaknesses of ML-based credit assessment through (1) presenting core ideas and the most common techniques in ML for the nontechnical audience; and (2) discussing the fundamental challenges in credit risk analysis. FinTech credit has the potential to enhance financi...

Surveillance Education

Surveillance Education explores the pervasive use of digital surveillance technologies in schools and assesses its pernicious effects on students. Recognizing that the use of digital technologies will persist, the authors instead offer practical ways to ameliorate their impact. In our era of surveillance capitalism, digital media technologies are ever more intertwined into the educational process. Schools are presented with digital technologies as tools of convenience for gathering and grading student work, as tools of support to foster a more equitable learning environment, and as tools of safety for predicting or preventing violence or monitoring mental, emotional, and physical health. Des...

Previous studies revealed that around 75 percent of all start-ups fail at an early stage. One main reason for this tremendous failure rate is that entrepreneurs are typically confronted with high levels of uncertainty about the viability of their proposed business idea. Following this argumentation, entrepreneurial decision-making can be defined as complex decision-making problem under both risk and uncertainty. While risk includes quantifiable probabilities, uncertainty describes situations where neither outcomes nor their probability distribution can be assessed a priori. Consequently, the entrepreneurial decision-making context is highly complex and contains lots of “black swan events” that seems to be unpredictable. As previous research does not provide any IT-based and scalable solutions for decisional guidance in such contexts, the purpose of this study is to explore the entrepreneurial decision- making context and then suggest novel and innovative design paradigms and design principles for decisional guidance in the context of entrepreneurial decision-making.

Emotions, Ethics, and Cinematic Experience

  • Categories: Art

Since the early 1990s, phenomenology and cognitivism have become two of the most influential approaches to film theory. Yet far from being at odds with each other, both approaches offer important insights on our subjective experience of cinema. Emotions, Ethics, and Cinematic Experience explores how these two approaches might work together to create a philosophy of film that is both descriptively rich and theoretically productive by addressing the key relationship between cinematic experience, emotions, and ethics.
