This book examines the life and works of Jane Addams who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (1931). Addams led an international women's peace movement and is noted for spearheading a first-of-its-kind international conference of women at The Hague during World War I. She helped to found the Women's International League of Peace and Freedom. She was also a prophetic peace theorist whose ideas were dismissed by her contemporaries. Her critics conflated her activism and ideas with attempts to undermine the war effort. Perhaps more important, her credibility was challenged by sexist views characterizing her as a “silly” old woman. Her omission as a pioneering, feminist, peace theorist is a co...

The methodological approaches in these disciplines vary from computational modelling of conflicts and surveys of military performance, to the qualitative study of military stories from the battlefield and veterans experiences. Rapidly developing technological facilities (more powerful hardware, more sophisticated software, digitalization of docu...

Time and organization are two of the biggest obstacles facing students as they begin the process of writing a term paper. This scholarly paper project organizer addresses these issues by reconceptionualizing "writing a paper" into "organizing a project." Writing is just one aspect of a term paper assignment. This organizer is a powerful workbook - a tool that helps the student-scholar manage or organize three elements of the term paper assignment: time, materials and ideas. Using the organizer, student-scholars build, make or do the critical behind-the-scenes elements of writing research papers: manage time, read, think, take notes, make an outline, etc. Ideally, a new organizer is purchased every time the student writes a significant research paper.

Although most medical school faculty members are required to teach, the standard medical school curriculum doesn't tell them how to do it well. This book does. An award-winning clinician-teacher, Helen M. Shields has spent her career training future doctors, researchers, and medical school instructors. Here she shares classroom-tested methods for developing, implementing, and evaluating effective curricula for medical students. Shields's five steps emphasize • extensive behind-the-scenes preparation, with a focus on visualizing both one's own performance and the desired student feedback • clear and logical presentations that match the material being taught • controlled exploration of t...

"Compiled in 940 at the court of the kingdom of Shu, the Huajian ji is the earliest extant collection of song lyrics by literati poets. The collection has traditionally been studied as the precursor to the lyrics of the Song dynasty, or in terms of what it contributed to the later development of the genre. But scholars have rarely examined the work as an anthology, and have more often focused on the work of individual poets and their respective contributions to the genre. In this book, Anna Shields examines the influence of court culture on the creation of the anthology and the significance of imitation and convention in its lyrics. Shields suggests that by considering the Huajian ji only in terms of its contributions to a later “model,” we unnecessarily limit ourselves to a single literary form, and risk overlooking the broader influence of Tang culture on the Huajian ji. By illuminating the historical and literary contexts of the anthology, the author aims to situate the Huajian ji within larger questions of Chinese literary history, particularly the influence of cultural forces on the emergence of genres and the development of romantic literature."
