Religion and Social Justice
This book is a philosophical examination of the relationship between religion and social justice. Its main thesis is that, since the primary purpose of religion is the moral and spiritual transformation of human nature, it ought not to be construed as a direct instrument of social justice on earth - as it is by Liberation theologians, for example, as well as by many liberal Christians and Jews. Indirectly, however, religion may well be a pre-condition of social justice. For it can be argued that, without the counteracting effects of the moral and spiritual values prescribed by religion, the liberal vision of individual rights and social justice may be self-defeating. Humanity is best served if this liberal vision is counterbalanced by the completely contrary utopia enshrined in the biblical idea of the kingdom of God, and its equivalents in the other great religions of the world.
Philosophy and Psychical Research
First published in 2002. This is Volume XV of seventeen in the Philosophy of Mind and Psychology series. The Muirhead Library of Philosophy was designed as a contribution to the History of Modern Philosophy under the heads: first of Different Schools of Thought-Sensationalist, Realist, Idealist, Intuitivist; secondly of different Subjects-Psychology, Ethics, Aesthetics, Political Philosophy, Theology. Written in 1976, this is a collection of essays by a number of well-known philosophers who were invited to write on whichever philosophical issue relating to psychical research interested them most.

As the book's subtitle says, 'Visible Gods' truly does give revealing glimpses into the ancient heritage of the Brahmins of India. Combining scholarly narrative, delightful stories depicting legends and stereotypes about Brahmins and brief biographies of some eminent Brahmins, the author presents a fascinating account of their character and obsessions, ideals and main achievements. At the same time, however, he is unsparing in his criticism of their major failures. Primarily intended to share with his family his feelings of pride as well as guilt in his Brahmin ancestry, the book should be of value to anyone interested in the cultural history of the world, especially of India. Steeped in history and full of knowledgeable commentary and learned insight, 'Visible Gods' is both thought provoking and educational.
Christian and Hindu Ethics
Hinduism and Christianity are different in structure and approach – but have a great deal in common in matters relating to ethics. This book, first published in 1969, is the first systematic and detailed work which attempts to bring out both the differences and similarities. The author selects some of the fundamental problems of philosophical ethics, such as the moral law – its authority and sources, moral effort and human freedom, moral failure and responsibility – and explores the respective answers of Hinduism and Christianity.
