This book presents a collection of cross-discipline articles that serves to close the documentation gap in liberal arts. Many Muslim societies are in the throes of tumultuous political transitions, and common to all has been heightened debate over the place of sharia law in modern politics and ethical life. Bringing together leading scholars of Islamic politics, ethics, and law, this book examines the varied meanings and uses of Islamic law, so as to assess the prospects for democratic, plural, and gender-equitable Islamic ethics today. These essays show that, contrary to the claims of some radicals, Muslim understandings of Islamic law and ethics have always been varied and emerge, not from unchanging texts but from real and active engagement with Islamic traditions and everyday life. The Reform in Higher Education in Muslim Societies is in sum a paradigm shift in perspective driven by important considerations including the aims of education itself. It may require reforming existing disciplines, inventing new ones, as well as working in conjunction with current knowledge(s) and discourses by taking effective account of the ethical, spiritual norms of Muslim society, the guiding principles that it operates under, which in turn mark the underlying basis of its makeup and spiritual identity. Rather than creating divisions, reform of Higher Education in Muslim Societies recognizes the plurality and diversity of the modern networked world, and seeks to replace sterile and uniform approaches to knowledge with a broader and more creative understanding of reality as lived on different soils and different cultures. This book is intended to present a compilation of research that bas incorporated the Islamic philosophical, theoretical, and historical perspective with the concepts, theories, and methods in psychology. While the relationship between Islam, research, and psychology has been studied previously, the effort to incorporate, integrate, and use Islamic resources to examine phenomena related to psychology through rigorous scientific methods has been found to be lacking among Muslim researchers. The present book, therefore, is an attempt to meet this need by incorporating the Islamic perspective in the conduct of research in psychology. It is also an attempt to contextualize Islam in the current efforts in research on psychology so that we can better understand the religion, both as an established way of life and as a model of scientific inquiry. Finally, the remaining chapters are dedicated to the discussion of the conceptual and strategic way forward for research in specific areas of psychology. In doing so, both the rationale and practicalities of incorporating, integrating, and utilizing Islamic resources in research on psychology have been provided.
