By the mid-1970s, Andy Warhol was veering away from his earlier focus on mainstream celebrities and toward more eclectic subjects, such as the cross-dressers in his Ladies and Gentlemen series. In 1976, he made a series of paintings and drawings of the Native American actor and activist Russell Means. Starting with popular publicity shots, Warhol transferred these images to silkscreen and then printed them on canvases. Warhol presents Means with exaggerated, glamorized features; some of the canvases include hand-painted embellishments and decorations that distinguish this series from the mechanical approach of Warhol's earlier celebrity portraits. Through a combination of mass technology and ornamental technique, Warhol transforms a commonplace image into a dignified and majestic portrait that pays tribute to both an individual and his people.

Mike Kelley's Arenas series of the late 80s and early 90s mark a shift away from the artist's performance-oriented activity and towards a new sculptural dexterity, in which cultural resonance is elicited from an eerie reframing of everyday objects. First exhibited in 1990 at Metro Pictures, the Arenas are comprised of stuffed animals arranged around the edges of blankets (or occasionally posed isolate in their center). Ten or twenty such toys in such groupings might convey a cheery childhood picnic scenario, but Kelley rarely selects more than five or six, and places them carefully so that their cuddliness and their capacity to comfort is entirely canceled out. Instead, we encounter the toy as a commodity entity--a mass-manufactured product positioned to enter into play but far from inviting it. Skarstedt's exhibition of seven of the eleven Arenas is here recorded in superb installation shots and with critical commentary.

In her art, Jenny Holzer (b. Gallipolis, Ohio, 1950; lives and works in New York) looks for ways to translate language into visual objects. She relies on a variety of forms of presentation to do so; most widely known are her illuminated letters and projections. Looking for new material to work with, she came upon texts from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan: government documents that had been redacted before being released to the public, including political directives, descriptions of torture methods, autopsy reports, and statements made by American officials, soldiers, and prisoners. Only partly legible because of the widespread blackening, these documents form the basis for Holzer's new pic...
