I januari 1894 möttes Sophie Elkan och Selma Lagerlöf för första gången. Kvinnornas möte resulterade i en livslång vänskap. Tyvärr betydde det att Sophie kom att leva i skuggan av sin framgångsrika väninna. Eva Helen Ulvros har tagit del av den rika brevsamling som Spohie Elkan efterlämnade. Resultatet är ett lyhört närmande till en person fylld av energi och livsglädje men också av ångest och oro. I biografin träder bilden av en målmedveten historiker och yrkeskvinna.

John Hall
En rörande skildring om John Hall, son till John Hall den äldre, affärsman och en av Sveriges rikaste i sin tid. John Hall den äldre lovade sin son ett liv utan arbete och tvång, ett liv i rikedom och njutning. Men efter faderns död, år 1802, tog det inte lång tid innan familjeföretaget stupade. Förtvivlat försökte John Hall åtgärda sina misstag, men som en konstens- och naturvetenskapens man hade han inte de egenskaper som krävdes. Han slutade sitt liv i rännstenen, blottad och hånad av folket runtomkring. Sophie Elkan föddes år 1853 (-1921) i Göteborg, och var en författare och en nära vän till Selma Lagerlöf. Hon gjorde succé med boken "John Hall". Sophie reste mycket under sitt liv, bland annat till Egypten och Palestina.

”Men medan nunnan vakade med detta stilla, plikttrogna, mogna lugn som hon lärt sig i klostercellen, vakade den unga hustrun med en bävande själs ångest, ett älskande hjärtas bultande vånda, med varje flygande pulsslag, varje skälvande nerv. Det syntes på de nästan pinsamt uttrycksfulla dragen, på den mörkröda ångestsky som en sekund målade kinden för att nästa sekund strömma tillbaka mot hjärtat och låta hyn återfå sin vanliga, matta blekhet, och på ögonen som skiftade färg och uttryck, allt eftersom tankarna jagade varandra.” Sophie Elkan (1853-1921), född Salomon, var författare och känd som en nära vän till Selma Lagerlöf. Efter att hennes man och tvååriga dotter gått bort i tuberkulos började hon skriva, till en början pedagogiska arbeten men senare nådde hon stora framgångar med sina historiska romaner. 1889 gjorde hon sin skönlitterära debut med novellsamlingen Dur och moll under pseudonymen Rust Roest. I fågelperspektiv är även den en novellsamling och utkom för första gången 1901.
