Comparative insights on astronomy, divination, and medicine from ancient texts Scientific Traditions in the Ancient Mediterranean and Near East presents a collection of articles by leading scholars on scientific practices in the ancient world, with emphasis on the fields of medicine, astronomy, astrology, and other forms of divination. The essays engage with a wide variety of textual sources in many different languages and scripts from Egypt and the Near East spanning more than a millennium, including some texts that are edited and discussed here for the first time. The contributors to this volume were tasked with approaching their texts not only as specialists, but also from a cross-cultural perspective, and the resulting body of work reveals new and exciting evidence for the transfer of scientific knowledge across cultural borders in the ancient Mediterranean and Near East. This book will be of interest primarily to specialists in the history of medicine, science, divination, and magic, as well as to papyrologists, Egyptologists, and Assyriologists.

Three new ancient and late antique Egyptian medical sources, now translated for the first time. A substantial addition to the limited body of ancient Egyptian medical records, Two Medical Manuscripts makes available for the first time a complete translated edition of three medical texts. On the verso and recto sides of the P. Carlsberg 8 manuscript, the first two texts are concerned with ophthalmology and gynecology; the third text, from a separate manuscript, is a Coptic treatise on how to treat a variety of ailments. Together, these manuscripts significantly expand our understanding of pre-modern medical practices and conceptual worlds.

Medicine in Ancient Assur
In Medicine in Ancient Assur Troels Pank Arbøll offers a microhistorical study of a single exorcist named Kiṣir-Aššur who practiced medical and magical healing in the ancient city of Assur (modern northern Iraq) in the 7th century BCE. The book provides the first detailed analysis of a healer’s education and practice in ancient Mesopotamia based on at least 73 texts assigned to specific stages of his career. By drawing on a microhistorical framework, the study aims at significantly improving our understanding of the functional aspects of texts in their specialist environment. Furthermore, the work situates Kiṣir-Aššur as one of the earliest healers in world history for whom we have such details pertaining to his career originating from his own time.
Novel Perspectives on Communication Practices in Antiquity
Documentary texts are vital to our understanding of many aspects of the ancient world, such as its administration, education, and economy. The value of these texts goes even further however: being autographs, they directly testify to ancient communication practices, a field of study which so far has remained underexplored. In this volume, specialists in the field engage with a broad range of documentary sources. They discuss not only how various modes of communication, such as language, handwriting, and lay-out, are employed in specific contexts of writing, but also how these different modes are interrelated. Building on insights from contemporary social-semiotic theory, the volume makes a case for the establishment of historical social semiotics as a discipline.

An archaeological study of Greek and Roman pottery recovered from the excavation of Syme Viannou The Sanctuary of Hermes and Aphrodite at Syme Viannou VII: The Greek and Roman Pottery presents in two volumes the Greek and Roman pottery recovered from the excavation of Syme Viannou. The sanctuary of Syme Viannou is renowned as one of the most long-lived and important cult sites of ancient Crete and the Aegean, dedicated to Hermes and Aphrodite in the Greek and Roman periods. The sanctuary was active from the early second millennium BC to the late first millennium AD and attracted visitors from much of the eastern half of Crete. This study catalogs and analyzes a body of approximately 865 pieces, dating from across the entire period in which the sanctuary was in use and exhibiting a wide range of shapes and types. Integrating traditional typological and chronological inquiries, contextual considerations, macroscopic and petrographic analyses of ceramic fabrics, and quantitative studies, this work provides detailed documentation of the pottery from Syme Viannou and explores its ritual and other roles within the diachronic panorama of cultic and other activities at the site.

This church, excavated between 2012 and 2023, dates to the fourth century CE and therefore is among the earliest purpose-built churches in Egypt.
