Provides a description about biomaterials, classification and fabrication technologies used in the development of nanostructured biomaterials. Provides a brief account of physicochemical attributes of nanoparticles and its role in summarizing applications of nanobiomaterials. Includes an integrated approach that is used to discuss both the biological and engineering aspects of nanostructured biomaterials. Presents an up-to-date and highly structured reference source for students, researchers and practitioners working in biomedical, biotechnological and engineering fields. Proposes novel opportunities and ideas for developing or improving technologies in nanomedicine/nanobiology and nanoremediation.
Development and Commercialization of Biopesticides: Costs and Benefits provides a uniquely comprehensive view of the commercial production of biopesticides, from research to application, featuring case studies in various developed and developing countries of the world. The book offers guidance for future strategies to researchers, along with considerations for the industry's economic concerns, i.e., costs and benefits compared to conventional pesticides, future perspectives for application strategies, bioavailability and environmental safety, and impacts on intellectual property issues during commercialization. Finally, the book covers why the development of this industry must be strategic, ...
An extraordinary compendium of information on herbal medicine, Medicinal Plants of the World, Volume 2 comprehensively documents the medicinal value of twenty-four major plants species widely used around the world in medical formulations. The book's exhaustive summary of available scientific data for the plants provides detailed information on how each plant is used in different countries, describing both traditional therapeutic applications and what is known from its use in clinical trials. A comprehensive bibliography of over 3000 references cites the literature available from a wide range of disciplines. This book offers an unprecedented collection of vital scientific information for pharmacologists, herbal medicine practitioners, drug developers, medicinal chemists, phytochemists, toxicologists, and researchers who want to explore the use of plant materials for medicinal and related purposes.
Vols. for 1964- have guides and journal lists.
Synthesis of Bionanomaterials for Biomedical Applications summarizes a range of procedures, including green synthesis of metal nanoparticles, metal oxide nanoparticles, and other types of nanoparticles while also exploring the appropriate use of these nanoparticles in various therapeutic applications such as anticancer, antibacterial, antifungal, drug delivery, and more. The book provides important information for materials scientists and pharmaceutical scientists on the synthesis of various nanoparticles using a variety of eco-friendly bionanomaterials. As concern has arisen regarding the environmental impact caused by some of nanomaterials, as well as their possible toxicity to cells, this...
This book surveys state-of-the-art and prospective practices, methods and technologies in agri-food and forestry sectors to document the potential measurable improvements in areas of environmental management, food security, economic growth, social cohesion and human health at the local and global scale. With a focus on the ecosystems-resources-climate-food-health nexus as a framework towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals applicable in these sectors, the book offers a portfolio of guidelines and standards that assesses the affordability, potential profitability and possible unintended consequences of interventions. The areas of intervention covered in the study include global...
A growing number of governments, donor agencies, and development organizations are committed to supporting nutrition-sensitive agriculture (NSA) to achieve their development goals. Although consensus exists on pathways through which agriculture may influence nutrition-related outcomes, empirical evidence on agriculture’s contribution to nutrition and how it can be enhanced is still weak. This paper reviews recent empirical evidence (since 2014), including findings from impact evaluations of a variety of NSA programs using experimental designs as well as observational studies that document linkages between agriculture, women’s empowerment, and nutrition. It summarizes existing knowledge regarding not only impacts but also pathways, mechanisms, and contextual factors that affect where and how agriculture may improve nutrition outcomes. The paper concludes with reflections on implications for agricultural programs, policies, and investments, and highlights future research priorities.
This book offers a detailed understanding of the principles, procedures, equipment, and operation of selected technologies used to manufacture and evaluate intelligent multifunctional textiles and apparel goods. Leading experts from different domains of polymers, fiber production, nanotechnology, and textile chemical finishing address the entire production process by delving into crucial concepts and topics such as the development, characterization, and potential applications of functional materials. Textiles for Functional Applications is an excellent resource for researchers, designers, and academics who want to learn more about designing feasible functional textiles.
