Heritage for a Sustainable Development: The World Heritage Sites and Their Impacts on Cultural Territories
This book explores the potential contribution of cultural heritage in the enhancement of the territories, investigating the possibilities but also the criticalities involved in the process. Based on the knowledge process built on the Monasteries of Haghpat, Sanahin, Geghard and moreover, in the Upper Azat Valley in Armenia, the work suggests the development of an integrated design approach with interdisciplinary focus. The conservation of the Architectural Heritage of these sites is a priority for the identity safeguard but also to start virtuous processes able to ensure a sustainable development for places and communities. The objective of this work is the setting of pilot strategies and guidelines for the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage as an engine for a compatible and sustainable tourism development of the area, with tangible impact on social and economic development of the country. The work would benefit local authorities and communities, as well as researchers involved in these topics.
Built Heritage: Monitoring Conservation Management

The walled city of Multan
Multan, one of the oldest inhabited cities in the Asian subcontinent and the sixth largest within the boundaries of Pakistan, is a city in the Punjab Province of Pakistan and capital of Multan District. A very complex place, where the process of constant stratification have left many signs on the urban texture. Here the different issues and problems involved, often with no easy solutions, face with the ethical responsibility and cure required from the historic and cultural heritage: how can we improve the urban quality and the living conditions of the inhabitants and at the same time preserve the unique identity of the places? These “Guidelines” try to face a challenge, testing new ways of project, starting from the specificities offered by the local culture and putting in place alternative practices of architecture.

Regeneration of the Built Environment from a Circular Economy Perspective
This open access book explores the strategic importance and advantages of adopting multidisciplinary and multiscalar approaches of inquiry and intervention with respect to the built environment, based on principles of sustainability and circular economy strategies. A series of key challenges are considered in depth from a multidisciplinary perspective, spanning engineering, architecture, and regional and urban economics. These challenges include strategies to relaunch socioeconomic development through regenerative processes, the regeneration of urban spaces from the perspective of resilience, the development and deployment of innovative products and processes in the construction sector in order to comply more fully with the principles of sustainability and circularity, and the development of multiscale approaches to enhance the performance of both the existing building stock and new buildings. Sustainable Urban Development and Globalization

Sustainable Social, Economic and Environmental Revitalization in Multan City
This book describes six months of initial intensive activities within a motivating multidisciplinary project to achieve sustainable social, economic, and environmental revitalization in the historic core of Multan City, Pakistan. The project is managed by Fondazione Politecnico di Milano within the framework of the "Pakistan-Italian Debt for Development Swap Agreement” and has five components: a livelihood improvement program, a living conditions improvement program, revitalization of physical assets, establishment of a Pakistan-Italian resource centre in Multan, and an Italian collaboration program for training and capacity building. All aspects are covered in this book, which provides a comprehensive account of progress in this excellent example of cross-cultural cooperation between a Western and an Eastern country in regenerating an historic populated site.
Villages et quartiers à risque d’abandon
La question des villages et quartiers à risque d’abandon est une problématique aujourd’hui commune à des nombreuses régions de la Méditerranée, et est considérée comme un point stratégique dans les nouvelles politiques européennes. La dégradation progressive des zones intérieures est une constante dans les pays caractérisés par le sous-développement économique, favorisant phénomènes d’émigration et de fragmentation du patrimoine culturel. Cela entraîne des problèmes d’architecture et de gestion du territoire. Certains aspects de ce problème se retrouvent également dans différentes zones urbaines. L’objectif principal de ce travail de recherche est donc de créer un espace de discussion qui peut comprendre l’étude, les diagnostics et les restitutions graphiques du patrimoine architectural et du paysage ainsi que les témoignages démo-ethno-anthropologiques, les stratifications typologico-constructives, les matériaux et les technologies des bâtiments historiques.
